Shorebirds Game Notes vs. Kannapolis

PREVIEW: The Shorebirds broke open a 10-2 victory with a six-run 6th inning on Saturday night. Delmarva has won three in a row, and 9 of its last 10 home games. Mike Yastrzemski hit an inside-the-park home run to highlight the Shorebirds' win. Delmarva will go for the series sweep over Kannapolis on Sunday afternoon.

TODAY'S OPPONENT: Jake Sanchez will start for the Intimidators in the series finale. The right- hander has split time as a starter and reliever, making 11 appearances (five starts). Sanchez has compiled a 4-2 record with a 2.97 ERA. Sanchez has recorded 50 strikeouts on the year, tied with Hunter Harvey for 3rd-most in the SAL. The Chicago White Sox signed Sanchez as a non-drafted free agent in 2013, and then he led the Pioneer League in ERA (2.87) and Ks (76).

19TH SEASON: The 2014 season marks the 19th season of Shorebirds baseball on the Eastern Shore and 18th straight year as a Baltimore Orioles affiliate. The Shorebirds' first season was 1996 as a Montreal Expos farm team.

ORIOLES WATCH: The Baltimore Orioles were shut out by Corey Kluber and the Cleveland Indians, 9-0 on Saturday. Ubaldo Jimenez ran into a wall in the 5th inning, giving up five runs. Meanwhile, Kluber struck out nine batters in seven innings for Cleveland. The O's are now 24-23 in 3rd place in the AL East, 2 1/2 games back of Toronto.

THE IRON IS HOT: 19 out of the 25 players on the Shorebirds active roster appeared for the Ab- erdeen IronBirds in 2013. The IronBirds put together an impressive season, making the playoffs for the first time in their 12-year franchise history. Aberdeen won the McNamara Division in the New York-Penn League with a 40-32 record. The IronBirds lost in the first round of the NYPL play- offs, losing 2 games to 0 against the Tri-City Valley Cats.

WHO'S HOT/WHO ELSE

SEBASTIAN VADER | P

On Thursday night, Vader pitched seven solid in- nings in a 5-1 win for Delmarva. It was the fifth consecutive victory for Vader, all coming in his last five starts. The Shore- birds' starter has now improved to 6-1, tied for the second-most wins in the South Atlantic League. Vader has also lowered his ERA to 3.16 on the season.

WHO'S HOT - JIMMY YACABONIS

Through his first 15 appearances, the Del- marva closer has yet to allow a run. Yacabo- nis is perfect 11-for-11 in save opportunities with a 1-0 record. In 17.0 innings, Yacabonis has struck out 23 batters.

WHO ELSE - DREW DOSCH

In Kannapolis, Dosch hit his first two home runs of the season. Last Friday, Dosch's two- run blast gave the Shorebirds a 4-2 in extra innings. The third baseman leads the team with a .309 batting average on the year.
