Power Breaks Open Close Game in Eighth

(Charleston, WV- May 25, 2014) - The West Virginia Power ousted the Lakewood BlueClaws on Sunday afternoon at Appalachian Power Park, 7-1. The Power and BlueClaws were locked in a pitchers duel until West Virginia plated six runs in the eighth behind an Elvis Escobar grand slam to win the game.

Lakewood took the early advantage two pitches into the game on a Jiandido Tromp solo blast. The Power answered in the fourth inning when Erich Weiss scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Chris Diaz.

In the eighth inning, West Virginia blew the game open. Lakewood reliever Delvi Francisco walked JaCoby Jones to lead off the inning. Harold Ramirez followed with a base hit and Edwin Espinal was hit by a pitch to load the bases. With nobody out, Erich Weiss was hit by a pitch, bringing Jones home. Chris Diaz walked in Harold Ramirez to push the lead to two. The inning would be capped off by an Elvis Escobar grand slam to right field as the Power pulled away.

Power reliever Isaac Sanchez (1-0) earned the win while Lakewood hurler Delvi Francisco (1-1) was charged with the loss. Erich Weiss went 2-for-3 in the West Virginia victory.

West Virginia visits the Rome Braves on Monday, May 26, at State Mutual Stadium. Buddy Borden will take the hill for the Power against the Braves Carlos Salazar. The Power return home for a three game series with the Kannapolis Intimidators on Monday, June 2, at Appalachian Power Park.
