Asheville Tourists News Release
A mammoth second inning, in which both teams scored six runs, set up a ding-dong battle in the Tourists' final home game of the season, the visitors edging the contest 12-10.
The second inning was a real festival of hitting. Both sides batted around their order, Kannapolis (batting around the order for only the twelfth time of the season) scoring six runs off of six hits including a lead off single by Brenton Metheny, and Asheville leveling the score with their own six-run inning off of five hits, with Nelson Robledo blasting a one-out two-RBI bomb over the left field wall.
Six runs each remained the scoreline until the Tourists took the lead with a run in the fourth, Cole Garner forcing a fielding error by shortstop Javier Castillo that enabled Chris Nelson to slide in to score from second base, giving the home team a 7-6 lead.
Kannapolis regained the lead in the top of the sixth inning. Javier Castillo reached on a throwing error, which was immediately followed by Brandon Allen's thirteenth home run of the season, a two-run shot that gave the visitors an 8-7 lead.
They extended their lead in the top of the seventh as the rain began to fall, two singles and an error enough to give the visiting team a 10-7 lead - their first 10 run tally in the whole month of August.
The rain turned to drizzle in the seventh inning stretch, and the Tourists struggled to claw their way back into the game. They scored one run in the eighth (Cole Garner with his 86th RBI of the season), but the Intimidators tagged two insurance runs in the top of the ninth to make the scoreline 12-8, and the Tourists had a mountain to climb.
Daniel Carte made that mountain a little less steep, blasting a two-run shot over the left field wall with nobody out to make the score 12-10. Two-outs later Nelson Robledo drew a walk to bring up Dexter Fowler, but Kannapolis forced a ground out holding on for only their second win in the last eighteen games.
