Greenville Drive News Release
Augusta, GA - These days it just seems as if no matter what they do, the Greenville Drive just can't pull out a victory. That was evident Thursday night as the Drive dropped both games of a doubleheader to the Southern Division champion Augusta GreenJackets.
In game one the Drive were shutout 7-0, amassing just four hits. Despite totaling 10 hits in game two, the Drive managed just two runs while losing to the âJackets who scored four runs on four hits.
Newcomer Donald Lawson (0-1) got off to a rocky start in game one, giving up two runs in the bottom of the first on three hits. Ben Copeland, the second batter of the game, blasted a solo shot to right and with two outs, Barry Gunther singled home Mike Mooney.
The onslaught continued as Augusta added three more runs off of Lawson, two in the third and one in the fourth. After Copeland and Eugenio Velez led off the third with a walk and single, respectively, Mooney singled them both home. In the fourth, Lawson issued three consecutive walks with two outs to allow the GreenJackets fourth run.
Augusta would close out their scoring with two runs, one earned, in the bottom of the fifth off reliever Ismael Casillas. Gunther scored on a fielding error by Dustin Kelly and Pablo Sandoval crossed home on a wild pitch.
Game two saw more of the same for the Drive as the GreenJackets struck early again, scoring all four of their runs over the first three innings versus Chris Jones (4-4). In the first, Velez tripled home Gunther.
An inning later, Sandoval scored on a Ryan Khoury error and Antoan Richardson collected an RBI when he knocked home Anthony Contreras with a sacrifice fly. In the third Sandoval knocked in the GreenJackets final run with an RBI single, plating Velez.
Despite recording nine hits through the first six innings, the Drive were unable to score a run until the final frame. With one out, Tony Granadillo reached on an error and Aaron Bates followed with his fourth home run of the season.
The Drive return home on September 1st to close out the 2006 season with a four-game series with the Kannapolis Intimidators. Tickets to can be purchased by calling the Drive Ticket Office at 864-240-4528 or online at www.greenvilledrive.com.
