Asheville Tourists News Release
ASHEVILLE - The Tourists pounded out eight hits but couldn't seem to string them together at the right times, falling in a 6-3 decision to the Greensboro Grasshoppers. The Tourists have lost four in a row and now must win the remaining games in this series to avoid suffering through their second consecutive losing homestand. Greensboro got on the board early against Connor Graham (10-6) with a pair of first inning runs. Back-to-back singles were followed by a Mike Stanton RBI double for the game's first run. The âHoppers would take a 2-0 lead on Hunter Mense's RBI groundout.
The Tourists answered to tie the game with runs in the fourth and fifth innings. In the fourth with runners at the corners and nobody out, Brian Lapin's double play ball plated Asheville's initial run. An inning later, Michael Mitchell drove home Everth Cabrera with an RBI single to tie the game at two.
In the fourth, the Grasshoppers tagged Graham for three runs on Justin Jacobs' RBI double to break the tie. Then with two outs, back-to-back RBI singles from Emilio Ontiveros and Stanton gave Greensboro a commanding 5-2 lead.
That's all Stuart Alexander (10-8) would need for the Grasshoppers, picking up the win on a night where he tossed six innings and allowed just two earned runs and seven hits with a walk and three strikeouts. The Greensboro bullpen held the Tourists to just one hit in the final three scoreless innings. Nick McCurdy pitched the ninth for his third save of the season.
Asheville would pull to within a pair in the bottom of the fourth on David Christensen's RBI groundout to score Brian Lapin, who doubled to lead off the frame. Following Lapin's double, the Tourists would only muster one more hit for the rest of the game - a Bo Bowman double to lead off the ninth. The âHoppers picked up an insurance run in the ninth on Mense's RBI single off Craig Baker. The Tourists look to get back on track after dropping eight of their last nine home games. Cory Riordan (7-8, 3.53) takes the ball against Brett Durand (9-5, 5.25) on Lunchbox Giveaway Night. The first thousand kids through the gates will receive a free Tourists lunchbox, compliments of Ingles. First pitch is at a special 7:15 p.m. start time to allow for the final live television broadcast of the season by WLOS sister station My40. The game can also be heard on the Tourists flagship station WRES-FM, 100.7.
The Asheville Tourists are the Single-A affiliate of the Colorado Rockies. Tickets are available by contacting the front office at (828)-258-0428 or on the website, www.theashevilletourists.com.
