Bumgarner, GreenJackets Shut Out Legends in Game One
August 15, 2008 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Lexington Legends News Release
Madison Bumgarner shutout the Lexington through six innings and struck out 12 Legends to lead the Augusta GreenJackets to a 7-0 victory in game one of the four-game series. Bumgarner surrendered only two hits and two walks in his six innings of work.
Lexington starting pitcher Jeff Icenogle matched the Giants' top prospect through the first three innings, but ran into trouble in the fourth. Nick Noonan singled to lead off the inning and advanced to second on Juan Ciriaco's walk. Icenogle walked Dayton Buller to load the bases and bring up Angel Villallona. Villallona hit a grand slam against the Legends when these two teams met in the first half, but the third baseman grounded into a force out erasing Noonan at home this time. Icengole rallied to strike Andrew Davis out, but couldn't escape the jam unscathed as he allowed one run to cross home on a wild pitch.
One run was all Bumgarner would need, but the GreenJackets blew the game open in the fifth inning for good measure. Dom Duggan walked, and Shan Jordan singled, moving Duggan to third to start the rally. Reid Kelly then came on in relief of Icenogle and promptly surrendered and two-run double to Noonan. Noonan moved to third on a throwing error from Jacob Priday and scored on Ciriaco's single. Buller walked and both runners moved up a base on Villalona's groundout before Garrett Baker tripled both runs home to give the GreenJackets a six-run lead.
Augusta added a seventh run in the seventh inning when Ciriaco reached on fielding error from Kyle Miller and scored on a double from Buller.
The Legends were no match for Bumgarner's impressive showing. The left-handed pitcher surrendered a single with one out in the first inning before retiring 13 batters in a row. The Legends would record their second hit of the game with one out in the sixth inning. Bumgarner extended his scoreless innings streak to 28 innings with the shutout performance.
Lexington fared no better against the Augusta bullpen as Andrew De La Garza and Paul Lussier combined for three perfect innings with five strikeouts to close the game. Jeff Icengole took his ninth loss of the season for Lexington.
