Greenville Drive News Release
Greenville, SC - The Drive (64-59, 24-29) held the South Atlantic League's most potent offense in check for five innings Friday night at Fluor Field. But in the end, the visiting West Virginia Power (68-55, 36-18) managed four runs over the final four innings to capture a 5-1 victory in the series opener.
An error and a disputed call in the top of the sixth proved to be the eventual game-winners for the Power. Eric Farris snuck past Matt Cooney's tag at home plate on Steffan Wilson's RBI-single for the go-ahead run, which also led to Drive manager Kevin Boles' ejection by umpire Seth Buckminster.
Eric Fryer, who reached on a fielding error by Zach Penprase, later scored when Zealous Wheeler grounded into a double play. The Power added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the ninth on Anderson De La Rosa's two-run homer off Javier Garcia.
Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth, the Drive pushed across their only run to tie the game. Carlos Fernandez tallied the only hit of the inning with a single to left, before advancing to second and third on wild pitches. Fernandez then scored on Oscar Tejeda's groundout.
On the mound for the Drive, Brock Huntzinger looked like a completely different pitcher from his debut on August 4th. The right-hander allowed one run on three hits, while fanning one.
Ryne Miller (1-3) took the hard luck loss, allowing a pair of unearned runs on four hits with three strikeouts in 3.0 innings.
The Drive and Power continue their four-game series Saturday night with first pitch set for 7:05 PM. Southpaw Felix Doubront will take the bump for Greenville as West Virginia counters with right-hander Evan Anundsen.
With a crowd of 6,039 fans, the Drive inched closer to their millionth fan as the total is now 986,723 in 200 games at Fluor Field. In each game until the milestone mark is reached one fan will be selected for the chance to be the honorary millionth fan.
