May 19, 2011 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Asheville Tourists News Release

ASHEVILLE ‚¬"Budweiser of Asheville and the Asheville Tourists will announce a new program prior to Thursday night's game against the Rome Braves. Known as "Here's to the Heroes," the program will consist of Budweiser of Asheville donating $50 to the WNC Heroes Scholarship Fund for every home run hit by a Tourist player during the 2011 season.

The WNC Heroes Scholarship Fund, started by Budweiser of Asheville, honors the soldiers lost in combat in Iraq and Afghanistan with ties to Western North Carolina. The foundation is coordinated through Anheuser-Busch's national platform of "Folds of Honor," which was founded in 2007 for the sole purpose of providing post-secondary educational scholarships for the children or spouses of military men and women killed or disabled while serving our nation. Together, Anheuser-Busch and its wholesalers have committed $2,000,000 to this national cause.

"Budweiser of Asheville and the Asheville Tourists have a long history of working together for the good of Western North Carolina," said Tourists general manager Larry Hawkins. "There are no greater heroes than those men and women who have given their lives for our country, and to be able to work with Budweiser of Asheville on this worthwhile cause is very gratifying."

Also at tonight's game there will be a special fundraiser effort for the family of Terry Varnardore, which will be sponsored by Budweiser of Asheville and the local Appalachian State University Alumni Association. Fans and others attending the game will have a chance to contribute to this worthy cause.

The Tourists will conclude its three-game series with Rome tonight, beginning at 7:05 p.m. The team will then host the Lexington Legends for four games, beginning on Friday. For more information, contact the Tourists' front office at (828) 258-0428.
