Albuquerque Isotopes News Release

Albuquerque sent 15 players to the plate in a nine-run sixth inning in defeating Las Vegas 16-9 on Thursday night in the opener of a four-game series at Isotopes Park.

Down 7-4 entering the bottom the sixth, the Isotopes used nine hits to score the nine runs, both season-highs for an inning. Chris Aguila led the inning off with a single, the first of two hits he would record in the sixth. After walks to Matt Treanor and pinch hitter Drew Niles, Wilson Valdez hit a single to the pitcher, scoring Aguila. The throw was wild, allowing Treanor to score and cutting the deficit to 7-6. Derek Wathan followed with a two-run single, giving the Isotopes their first lead of the game at 8-7.

Albuquerque fell behind 4-1 as Las Vegas scored three runs in the second inning, taking advantage of an Isotopes error. The lead grew to 5-1 on a Cody Ross homer in the third off starter Aaron Small. Albuquerque responded with two of its own in the third as Brian Banks drove in two runs.

The teams exchanged runs in the fifth before the Isotopes exploded in the sixth. Jason Wood then added a three-run homer in the eighth inning, extending the Isotopes club record of hitting a homer to eight consecutive games. Derek Wathan also added a hit in the inning, becoming the first Isotope to record five hits in a game.

The Isotopes set a franchise record with 21 hits, winning for the third straight game and staying in a first place tie in the Central Division with Iowa. Frankie Gracesqui (1-0) earned the win in relief.

The Isotopes (23-18) and 51s (19-22) play game two of four tomorrow night, beginning at 7:11 PM. Post-game fireworks will follow.
