Beavers' Petrick retires

PORTLAND, Ore. - Portland Beavers first baseman/outfielder Ben Petrick has retired as an active player after a nine-year professional baseball career, it was announced today.

Petrick, a Hillsboro, Ore., native, batted .225 (18-for-80) with two home runs and 11 RBIs in 24 games with the Beavers.

A standout prep performer at Glencoe High School, Petrick was a second-round selection of the Colorado Rockies in the 1995 draft and spent parts of five seasons at the major league level with the Rockies and the Detroit Tigers.

In 240 major league games, Petrick, 27, batted .257 with 27 home runs and 94 RBIs.

Petrick began the 2004 season in the Tigers chain with Triple-A Toledo before joining the Beavers on April 20. He homered in his first at-bat with the Beavers.

Petrick, a three-time minor league all-star, hit .268 with 109 home runs and 405 RBIs in 717 minor league games in his nine years.
