Portland Beavers News Release

PORTLAND, Ore. - Jimmy Anderson worked eight strong innings and former San Diego Padre Rey Ordonez had three hits as the Iowa Cubs defeated the Portland Beavers 6-1 in front of 5,340 Thursday night at PGE Park.

Anderson gave up a run on five hits in his 8.0 innings to even his season ledger at 3-3.

San Diego Padres left-hander Sterling Hitchcock, who began a major league rehab start with the Beavers on Thursday, took the loss after being lifted in the fourth inning.

After falling behind 1-0 in the first, the Cubs (23-18) scored six unanswered runs to take the first game of the four-game series.

Matt Creighton's solo home run down the left field line off Hitchcock tied the game in the top of the second; the Cubs took a 2-1 lead in the third when David Kelton singled home Trenidad Hubbard, who singled to lead off the inning.

The Cubs stretched that to 5-1 with three runs in the fourth inning, which included an RBI double by Hubbard, a former Beaver, and a run-scoring single by Calvin Murray.

Ordonez scored an unearned run in the top of the eighth to round out the scoring.

The Beavers (19-22) manufactured a run in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. Bernie Castro led off with a single and advanced to second on a walk to Jose Nieves. Castro, who moved to third when Jon Knott grounded into a double play, scored on Xavier Nady's infield single.

Knott had two hits and has now hit in 21 of his last 24 games.

Hitchcock (0-1), who allowed five runs (4 earned) on eight hits in 3.2 innings, threw 60 pitches, 41 for strikes and 19 for balls. He is coming back from a fractured rib that landed him on the Padres disabled list in early April.

Ordonez, who joined the Cubs on Thursday, was with the Padres, the major league affiliate of the Beavers, at the beginning of spring training before leaving the team.

The series continues Friday night at PGE Park in a 7:05 p.m. start.

NOTES: Beavers first baseman-outfielder Ben Petrick, who joined the Beavers a month ago, retired as an active player on Thursday after a nine-year professional baseball career ... ... former Padre Jason Szuminski pitched the bottom of the ninth ... left-hander Matt Hampton worked 2.0 scoreless innings in his first home outing since joining the Beavers ... the Beavers committed three errors while the Cubs committed two.
