Edmonton Trappers News Release
EDMONTON, AB - The Edmonton Trappers Baseball Club announced today that right-handed pitcher Tony Armas Jr. has been assigned to the club on Major League injury rehabilitation. Armas' rehab assignment was transferred from Single-A Brevard County, where he went 0-1, 6.75 (9.1 IP - 7 ER) in three starts. He will start Edmonton's game on Saturday night in New Orleans against the Zephyrs and in the process will join his father, Tony Sr., as the only father-son combo to play for the Trappers in the club's 24-year history. Edmonton's roster currently stands at 24 players; 12 pitchers, two catchers, seven infielders and three outfielders, plus two players (right-hander Seung Song and infielder Henry Mateo) on the disabled list and one player on a Major League injury rehabilitation assignment (Tony Armas Jr.).
Armas, 26, was placed on the 15-day disabled list on April 3 with a strained right rotator cuff. He was assigned to Brevard County on May 6 and began his rehab assignment with the Manatees that day. Armas missed most of the 2003 season after having surgery on his right shoulder and finished the campaign with a 2-1 record and a 2.61 ERA (31.0 IP - 9 ER) in just five starts. The native of Puerto Piritu, Venezuela was originally signed by the New York Yankees as a non-drafted free agent in 1995 and was traded to the Boston Red Sox in 1997. He was later dealt by the Red Sox to the Expos, along with right-handed pitcher Carl Pavano, in exchange for right-handed pitcher Pedro Martinez. Armas was the Expos Opening Day starter in 2003, earning the win at Turner Field in Atlanta. He owns a 30-37 record and a 4.11 ERA (493.0 IP - 225 ER) in 86 career starts in the Major Leagues.
The next Trapper home game will be on Friday, May 28 when the club will take on the Sacramento River Cats. The game will begin at 7:05 PM. Tickets for all regular season home games are on sale and can be purchased through Ticketmaster at 451-8000. Twenty-game packs and 2004 season tickets are also currently on sale at the Trapper General Office. For more information call 414-4450.
