WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The Nashville Sounds opened their eight-game road trip to Northern California on the wrong foot on Thursday evening, falling 10-0 to the Sacramento River Cats in the opener of a four-game series at Raley Field.

Nashville (20-19) fell out of first place in the PCL Eastern Division with the shutout loss, their third goose egg of the season. Sounds batters were limited to only six hits on the evening and failed to record an extra-base hit for the first time this season.

Sounds starter Cory Stewart (4-1) took his first loss of the year after allowing five runs on five hits and walking a Nashville season-high six batters in 5 1/3 innings.

Esteban German and Graham Koonce each homered for the River Cats to lead the 12-hit attack against Nashville pitching, and Sacramento starter Mike Wood (7-2) -- the current Pacific Coast League Pitcher-of-the-Week -- picked up his sixth straight win by hurling seven scoreless frames that included six strikeouts.

Sounds outfielder Rich Thompson and third baseman Luis Figueroa led all Nashville hitters with 2-for-4 efforts in the contest.

The Sounds and River Cats continue the series with a 9:05 p.m. CT meeting on Friday evening at Raley Field. Left-hander Dave Williams (1-1, 3.30) takes the hill for Nashville to face Sacramento right-hander Joe Blanton (3-1, 2.66).
