Toledo Mud Hens News Release
TOLEDO, Ohio - Jeimer Candelario's sixth home run of the year in Triple-A would be the game-winning hit Thursday.
The eighth-inning blast provided the Toledo Mud Hens with a 5-4 series win over the Indianapolis Indians at Fifth Third Field to conclude the four-game homestand.
Registering just their fifth win in 2019 when trailing after seven innings, the Mud Hens trail their division rival by two games for second place in the International League West, with four more left in the season-series.
Candelario, now in his seventh game in his second MLB rehab assignment, and Pete Kozma each notched two hits.
Daz Cameron led off for the 50th time this season season and would record his first leadoff home run since May 2.
In his last 10 games, the No. 8 Detroit Tigers prospect has batted 11-for-42 with two doubles, four home runs and eight RBIs.
After Frank Schwindel picked up his 21st RBI in the 22 days following his transfer from Double-A Erie, the Indians captialized on a double and sacrifice fly to tie it in the third inning.
The two runs scored by Jason Martin and Kevin Kramer marked the end of Victor Alcantara's third start in three years with Toledo.
Alcantara, the 26-year-old native of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, was optioned from Detroit on August 5 where he appeared in 43 games this season.
Since then, Alcantara has pitched 12.1 innings and allowed 11 total runs on 13 total hits, which includes Thursday's spot start.
Yefry Ramirez (2-5, 8.03) lasted 6.0 innings and struck out eight for the non-decision in his fifth start with the Indians.
Indianapolis took a 3-2 lead as Mitchell Tolman singled off the first ball thrown by John Schreiber later in the inning.
Recently promoted to Detroit earlier this month, Schreiber and fellow long reliever Caleb Thielbar combined for 4.2 innings pitched, striking out nine and giving up zero runs.
Eduardo Jimenez (4-3, 2.52 ERA) took the mound to begin the eighth and surrendered back-to-back doubles to Ke'Bryan Hayes and Will Craig to break four inning stretch without a run scored.
Craig, the 2016 Pittsburgh Pirates first-round draft pick, has collected 22 extra base hits this year with four other active Indians batters currently sitting above the 20-mark through the latter half of August.
Jimenez is second for the Mud Hens in WHIP (0.98).
Toledo would cut its two-run deficit with Chad Sedio singling up the middle to bring home Pete Kozma.
Having arrived from High-A Lakeland on August 11, where he slashed .275/.369/.339 in 51 games this year, Sedio has made eight starts at third base since Ronny Rodriguez received another promotion back to Detroit.
Indianapolis got the force out with Sedio charging to second, leaving Cameron as the game-tying run at first, before Candelario sent his home run over thr right field wall.
Three of the Mud Hens' last four wins have ended in come-from-behind fashion.
What's Next:
Spenser Watkins (5-3, 6.29 ERA) is probable to start Friday in the first of a three-game series against the Columbus Clippers.
Opening pitch from Huntington Park is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. (EST).
