King matches career-high with 11 strikeouts as RailRiders fan 16 Red Sox

MOOSIC, PA - After a 41-minute rain delay the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders defeated the Pawtucket Red Sox 4-3, Thursday night at PNC Field. Michael King matched his career-high of striking out 11 batters and Chance Adams recorded his first save of the season to lead the RailRiders to victory.

King began the contest by striking out the side in the top of the first inning. The righthander was perfect through three innings and finished with 11 punchouts in 6.2 innings, the most by a RailRiders pitcher this year. He allowed a two-run home run to C.J. Chatham in the sixth, but that was all the Red Sox could do against him.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre got on the board early in the bottom of the first as Breyvic Valera hit an RBI single and plated a run, giving the home team a 1-0 lead. Keeping the momentum, Gosuke Katoh nailed a two-base hit and plated two runs for the RailRiders in the bottom of the fourth, extending their advantage to 3-0.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre plated an additional run in the bottom of the fifth as Kyle Higashioka grounded out and Billy Burns scored, extending the advantage to 4-0.

Following the Chatham homer, Pawtucket attempted to rally in the top of the ninth inning as Cole Sturgeon hit an RBI double to right field, and plated a run. With the Paw Sox now only trailing by one, Adams entered the game out of the bullpen and recorded his first save of the season for the RailRiders and shut them down.

King (1-1) was the winning arm for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre over 6.2 innings of work and Ryan Weber (1-4) took the loss for Pawtucket over 6.0 innings.

The RailRiders head to Lehigh Valley, beginning a three-game series on Friday. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre is home again Friday August 30th to play against the Buffalo Bisons in a four-game set.
