April 28, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
(Pawtucket, RI) - Jess Todd was excellent in his first start since 2008, giving the PawSox four shutout innings and leading a brigade of relievers on the mound in a 4-1 win over the Syracuse Chiefs on Tuesday night at McCoy Stadium.
Todd, called upon to start in place of Steven Wright - who had been promoted to Boston the day before - took the mound in the first inning for the first time in seven seasons. He worked around one baserunner in each of his frames and left the game with Pawtucket ahead 4-0.
The PawSox (13-7) plated a pair in their half of the first inning off of Syracuse starter Matt Swynenberg, who took the ball for the Chiefs (6-13) after scheduled starter A.J. Cole was promoted to Washington. With the bases loaded and two out, Matt Spring ripped a two-run single down the left field line.
Pawtucket repeated the feat in the second. Back-to-back singles by Deven Marrero and Sean Coyle opened the frame. With one out, Blake Swihart's second hit in as many innings made it 3-0. With two down, Bryce Brentz ripped his sixth double of the season to score Jemile Weeks and push the lead to four.
Syracuse scored an unearned run off of Robby Scott in the fifth; Matt Den Dekker dinked an infield hit, advanced to second base on an error, moved to third on Josh Johnson's single and scored on a sacrifice fly from Michael Taylor. Scott gave the PawSox three innings and handed the ball to Dana Eveland. Eveland earned a two-inning save without allowing a hit and striking out two.
Game three of the series is scheduled for Wednesday night with first pitch at 6:15pm. Henry Owens (1-0, 3.94) will take the mound for Pawtucket and be opposed by Syracuse lefty Richard Bleier (0-1, 3.86). Good seats are still available at the McCoy Stadium box office, by calling (401) 724-7300 or by visiting pawsox.com. Radio coverage on 920 AM (WHJJ) and also streaming online begins at 6:00 pm.
