Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
(Pawtucket, RI) - Quintin Berry collected two RBI singles and Brian Johnson combined with two relievers to limit Syracuse to just five hits as the Pawtucket Red Sox topped the Chiefs, 3-1, in the opener of a four-game series Monday night in front of 3,049 fans at McCoy Stadium.
Berry capped a two-run rally in the first inning with a two-out run-scoring hit, then provided an insurance run in the eighth with another two-out RBI single. He finished the game 3-for-4. Johnson (3-1), the reigning IL Pitcher of the Week, worked around five walks to allow just one run in five innings of work.
Pawtucket jumped on Chiefs starter Taylor Hill (1-1) in the first inning, collecting four hits and a walk in taking a 2-0 lead. Bryce Brentz opened the scoring with a bases-loaded RBI single, then two outs later Berry drove his first run-scoring hit to right.
Johnson made the lead hold up, scattering a pair of hits and striking out six in his five innings. Syracuse stranded six men on base against the left-hander.
Zeke Spruill entered in relief of Johnson and pitched scoreless ball in the sixth and seventh innings, while closer Tommy Layne recorded his third save in as many chances by blanking the Chiefs over the final two frames.
Hill allowed eight hits and two runs in 5.2 innings of work for Syracuse. Eric Fornataro, the third Chiefs pitcher of the night, walked Garin Cecchini with one out in the eighth and Cecchini promptly stole second base. One batter later, Berry delivered an insurance run with an RBI single up the middle.
Jackie Bradley, Jr. joined Berry with three of Pawtucket's nine hits, while Blake Swihart went 2-for-4. Michael Taylor and Cutter Dykstra each had a pair of Syracuse's five base hits.
Game two of the series is scheduled for Tuesday night with first pitch at 6:15pm. As of Monday night neither team had announced a starting pitcher.
