Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
HEARTBREAK HOTEL: Cedric Hunter lined a two-out, two-run homer to right field that allowed the Gwinnett Braves to walk off with a 6-5 win over the RailRiders on Monday night. The loss snapped the RailRiders' season-best three-game road winning streak.
FIRST TIME IN A LONG TIME: SWB lost at Gwinnett for the first time since July 23, 2012 when the then-SWB Yankees fell to the G-Braves, 10-6. The SWB franchise had won eight straight games at Coolray Field.
SUZYN, YOU CAN'T PREDICT BASEBALL: The G-Braves entered the game averaging a league-low 3.3 runs/game with a league-low three home runs. The six runs scored tied the team's season-high output in a single game this season.
IN HIS WEBB: Southpaw reliever Tyler Webb inherited a bases-loaded jam in the fifth inning and left them loaded by striking out former RailRider Adonis Garcia to end the frame. Webb has allowed just seven of 34 (.206) inherited runners to score on his three-year pro career.
NOT-SO-GENTLE BEN: Ben Gamel entered defensively for Galvez in the home seventh. He struck out on a foul tip in his lone at-bat. Gamel ranks among the IL's best in batting average (1st, .396), on-base percentage (3rd, .463) and slugging percentage (5th, .583). His three triples have him trailing only Toledo's Daneil Fields. Gamel has more triples than four IL teams (Buffalo, Lehigh Valley, Norfolk, Pawtucket).
MULTIPLICITY: Slade Heathcott posted a pair of hits, a walk and a run scored. The RailRiders' usual leadoff man owns multiple hits in six of his last seven games, hitting .560 (14-for-25) in that time with five RBIs. With 25 hits the first-year Triple-A man trails only Lehigh Valley's Maikel Franco (27) for the most knocks in the IL.
RBI ROB: Rob Refsnyder picked up his eighth RBI on the year and his fifth over his last three games. In that time, the usual three-hole hitter has gone 6-for-12 (.500), lifting his season-long average by 53 points (.193-.246).
BRAVO: The 2014 RailRiders took six of the eight overall clashes with Gwinnett including a four-game sweep at Coolray Field. They outscored the G-Braves, 45-21, doubled them up in homers, 8-4, and took the season series for a third straight year. SWB has won 19 of its last 25 (.760) against Gwinnett.
SOUTHERN EXPOSURE: Last night the RailRiders began a long stretch dominated by Southern Division competition. It marked the start of a 10 straight against Southern Division foes, a run that includes 24 out of 27 bleeding into the late stage of May. The 2014 RailRiders went 14-18 against the South. While they had a winning record against Gwinnett, they posted losing marks against each of the division's other three teams (Charlotte, 2-6; Durham, 3-5; Norfolk, 3-5). The team owned an 8-8 road against versus its southern brothers.
OFF THE RAILS: The RailRiders' pitching staff leads the IL with 157 strikeouts...SWB's Cole Figueroa entered today as the toughest hitter to whiff in the IL (34.0 PA/K)...The RailRiders have not been charged with an error over a season-long three-game stretch...SWB became the last IL team to suffer its first one-run loss of the season (now 3-1 in one-run games)...It was also the first time the RailRiders lost when leading after eight innings (entered the game 6-0)...Refsnyder became the team's 10th different DH of the season...Six of the seven home runs allowed by SWB pitching have come against the bullpen...The RailRiders suffered a pair of blown saves...They have now blown seven saves in 11 chances.
