Tobias' Home Run not enough as Cutters Lose 2-1
September 3, 2015 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Williamsport Crosscutters News Release
The Williamsport Crosscutters dropped a tough 2-1 decision on Thursday night against the West Virginia Black Bears. The Cutters have now lost three games in a row with four games left to play in the regular season. Williamsport holds a five game lead over West Virginia for second place in the Pinckney Division. The Cutters are still looking to lock up home field advantage throughout the 2015 playoffs.
Josh Tobias got the offense going for the Cutters in the top of the first inning as he hit his fourth home run of the season to make it 1-0. Alejandro Arteaga looked to turn in a quality start for Williamsport and improve on his 4-2 record. Arteaga kept West Virginia off of the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning as he retired the Black Bears in order. The Black Bears would produce the game tying run in the bottom of the second inning.
West Virginia kicked off the inning with back to back singles to put a pair of runners on base. Both runners would move into scoring position after a SAC bunt and then score one on a SAC fly to even the score 1-1. Williamsport had a glorious chance to take a lead in the top of the fourth inning as Tobias singled to kick things off. Tobias would then steal second base and advance to third on a throwing error with no outs. The Cutters would leave Tobias at third base as they were unsuccessful in three tries.
Arteaga worked five innings on the night for the Cutters and would exit trailing 2-1. Arteaga allowed a run in the bottom of the fourth inning on another SAC fly after surrendering a pair of hits and issuing a walk. Williamsport had a chance offensively to answer in the top of the sixth inning after Venn Biter and Tobias each singled. Brendon Hayden would ground into a 1-6-3 double play to end the inning and the scoring opportunity. Ismael Cabrera and Skylar Hunter combined to toss three innings of shutout baseball. Cabrera and Hunter each struck out two batters.
