Lowell Spinners News Release

ABERDEEN, MD. - With every game critical in the Lowell Spinners playoff push Thursday's outcome may be one loss too many for the Spinners, who suffered a 2-1 walk-off loss to the Aberdeen IronBirds.

Lowell (36-36) jumped out to an early lead in the third inning. After back-to-back singles by Mitch Gunsolus and Tate Matheny to lead off the inning, a one-out sacrifice fly by Jeremy River gave the Spinners a 1-0 lead.

Aberdeen (36-36) pulled even in the fourth inning with a two-out run. After Drew Turbin singled with two down, Oswill Lartiguez doubled to right, scoring Turbin to tie the score at one.

The score remained there into the ninth, when the Spinners had a chance to pull ahead. After a one-out double by Josh Ockimey, pinch-runner Trenton Kemp moved to third on a passed ball. Aberdeen however buckled down, as Kyri Washington and Gunsolus each went down swinging, leaving Kemp stuck at third.

The IronBirds pounced in the ninth, after a lead-off single and double by Alex Murphy put two in scoring position with none out. After an intentional walk to load the bases Lartiguez singled to give Aberdeen a walk-off, 2-1, win.

Matheny led the Spinners with a pair of hits, while Ockimey and Tyler Spoon each doubled in the loss.

Jose Almonte was phenomenal for the Spinners, allowing just one run on six hits and one walk over 6.2 innings. He struck out a season-best nine batters. Trevor Kelley (1-3, 2.76) suffered the loss, striking out four over 1.1-plus, allowing the one run on three hits.

The Spinners look for the series win to keep their playoff hopes alive when they send Kevin Steen to the mound for a 7:05pm first pitch Friday night.
