Bats, Lights Fail Scrappers
September 3, 2015 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Mahoning Valley Scrappers News Release
The Scrappers brought out the bats for an 11-5 win on Wednesday, but dropped the second game of a three-game series to the Doubledays 5-4 on Thursday night at Falcon Park.
The lights were out, but never came back -- literally. The light tower in right-center field was not operating from the first inning throughout the entire game. After the Scrappers put their fourth run on the board in the fourth, the bats went just about silent.
The Scrappers are now 3-5 against Auburn this season, and the Doubledays have officially won the season series.
Mahoning Valley grabbed two runs for early support for Sam Hentges, who took the loss. The big hit was a two-run double for Juan De La Cruz.
Auburn got a run in the bottom of the third, when Victor Robles doubled and later scored on a single to center for Kelvin Gutierrez.
The Scrappers got two more in the fourth, to give Hentges more room to work with. Jack Goihl doubled to right, and then Gabriel Mejia singled to right to score Alexis Pantoja, who had singled to left. Goihl later scored on a Taylor Hearn wild pitch with Ka'ai Tom at the plate.
Auburn's bats exploded for four runs in the fourth. Darryl Florentino scored on a single by Dalton Dulin to right. Then the big hit came. Gutierrez singled to right to score Jorge Tillero and Victor Robles. The Doubledays took a 5-4 lead, and that would be all the scoring for either side.
Sam Hentges lasted 3.2 innings and allowed eight hits and four earned runs. For the second straight start, Hentges mixed walks and hits to dig himself into a hole. He did strike out two. Jimmy Stokes pitched 3.1 innings of scoreless baseball, while allowing just one hits and no walks.
The Doubledays bullpen was lights out after Hearn went four innings. Kevin Mooney, Adam Boghosian, and Mariano Rivera combined to toss five scoreless innings while striking out seven. The Auburn pitching staff combined for 12 strikeouts.
Jared Robinson takes the hill on Friday night for Mahoning Valley, in what will be his final start of the season. Righty Maximo Valerio gets the ball for the Doubledays at 7:05 from Falcon Park.
