Zabala, Badamo Lead Cyclones over Tigers in Connecticut

NORWICH, CT- September 3, 2015--The Cyclones jumped on top early in Connecticut on Thursday evening and never gave up the lead, eventually beating the Tigers by a 5-3 score. Despite losing two everyday players in Vinny Siena and Jeff Diehl, Brooklyn supplied enough offense to win the third of a four-game set at Dodd Stadium. Led by three hits from Emmanuel Zabala and a solid final start of the season for RHP Tyler Badamo, the Cyclones have set themselves up with a chance to win the last road series of 2015.

Brooklyn got things started right away, putting up a crooked number in top of the first. After a leadoff double from Alfredo Reyes, a single from Zabala put runners at the corners. A balk called on Connecticut starter Ryan Castellanos brought Reyes in for the game's first run while Zabala advanced to second. After a sacrifice bunt moved him to third, Zabala scored on a groundout by Jose Garcia as the visitors took an early 2-0 lead.

The lead would stretch in the third when Reyes tripled in his second at-bat. Zabala followed with his second hit of the game, driving Reyes in and making it a 3-0 advantage for the Cyclones.

Connecticut had runners aboard in each of the first three innings against Badamo. Despite giving up five hits over that span, he held strong and kept the home team off the board. In the fourth, the Tigers would break through without a hit after a leadoff walk to Shane Zeile. A wild pitch moved Zeile to second before a fly out got him to third with one out. A groundout from Steven Fuentes brought Zeile in, cutting the Brooklyn lead to 3-1.

Brooklyn would give Badamo some more cushion in the sixth as the top of the order got things started once again. Reyes was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning before Zabala singled for his third hit of the game. Desmond Lindsay followed with a double, scoring Reyes and moving Zabala to third with nobody out. A Brandon Brosher single brought Zabala home and knocked Castellanos out of a 5-1 ballgame. The Cyclones didn't score for the rest of the night but it wouldn't matter; five runs was enough on this night.

Badamo settled in nicely and didn't surrender a hit after the third inning. In the sixth, the right hander snared a line drive hit back to him before running into some trouble. An error and a walk left two runners on with one out. After a strikeout, Badamo was removed for RHPJohnny Magliozzi. Over 5.2 innings, Badamo allowed one run on five hits over six innings while walking two and striking out five. Magliozzi induced a ground ball to end the threat and Badamo (5-6, 3.10) would later be credited with his fifth win in his final start of the season.

Magliozzi stayed on in the seventh where Connecticut started a comeback bid. After an out, a single and a wild pitch put Jose Zambrano on second base for the Tigers. Tanner Donnels followed with a triple, bringing in Zambrano before a single scored Donnels and made it a 5-3 game. Another single put a second runner on before Magliozzi recorded the second out of the inning. A walk would load the bases before Brooklyn skipper Tom Gamboa called on RHP Craig Missigman out of the bullpen. Missigman struck out Keaton Jones to end the threat and keep the Cyclones in front.

Missigman stayed on for the bottom of the eighth, where the Tigers continued trying to claw back. A hit batsmen and a walk led off the inning before an out was recorded. With runners on first and second, LHP Carlos Valdez came in and struck out two Tigers to end the inning. Brooklyn's arms held Connecticut to a 2-for-16 mark with runners in scoring position on the night.

In the ninth, it was Valdez remaining in the game for Brooklyn. Things got interesting for the third straight inning as the tying runs reached base on an infield hit and an error on Reyes at shortstop. A line drive made the second out before a passed ball with two out moved the runners to second and third. Valdez eventually secured his fifth save after a fly out from Steven Fuentes to end the ballgame, giving the Cyclones a 5-3 win.

The Cyclones conclude their four game series with Connecticut on Friday at Dodd Stadium. First pitch is scheduled at 7:05 PM as LHP Kevin Canelon takes the mound for Brooklyn. The Cyclones return home for their final home series of the regular season on Saturday, September 5th when they take on the rival Staten Island Yankees.
