Black Bears Roar Past Crosscutters 2-1

September 3, 2015 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
West Virginia Black Bears News Release

The West Virginia Black Bears improved their winning streak to three games after defeating the Williamsport Crosscutters 2-1 on Thursday evening at Monongalia County Ballpark. With the win, the Black Bears improve to 39-33 overall and continue to hold a 1.0 game lead over the State College Spikes in the Wild Card standings of the New-York Penn League.

The Crosscutters appeared to come out firing in tonight's game after Josh Tobias hit a two-out solo shot to deep right-center to give Williamsport an early 1-0 lead. Despite the early lead for the Crosscutters, it was all Black Bears for the rest of the game.

West Virginia evened the score in the second inning after DH Daniel Arribas and RF Ryan Nagle led the inning off with back-to-back singles. 1B Albert Baur then successfully sacrificed the runners to second and third on a bunt, bringing 3B Ke'Bryan Hayes to the plate. Hayes then delivered a sacrifice fly to deep center field brining home Arribas to tie the game at 1-1. The teams played a scoreless third inning before the West Virginia offense struck again in the fourth.

Arribas and Nagle once again led the inning off with back-to-back walks which were followed later by a walk from Hayes to load the bases. CF Casey Hughston then blasted a sacrifice fly to right field to bring home Arribas and give the Black Bears a 2-1 lead.

Williamsport threated to score in the sixth inning after leading the inning off with back-to-back singles but was stopped short after a fly-out and an inning ending double play. The Black Bears pitching staff was lights out the rest of the way to secure the 2-1 victory.

SP Dario Agrazal picked up his team leading sixth win (6-5) after tossing 6.0 strong innings, allowing only the solo home run in the first inning. The right-hander scattered six hits in his outing and struck out four Williamsport batters. RP Stephan Meyer came out of the bullpen and shut the Crosscutters down, pitching 3.0 scoreless innings and allowing only one hit to register his first save of the season.

The Black Bears were led offensively by 2B Mitchell Tolman, C Christian Kelley, Nagle and Arribas who all finished the night with two hits apiece. Hayes and Hughston each picked up an RBI for West Virginia, both coming on sacrifice fly's.

West Virginia and Williamsport will wrap up the series finale tomorrow, Friday, September 4 at Monongalia County Ballpark with a scheduled first pitch of 7:05 p.m. This will be the final regular season home game for the Black Bears.
