Tip-A-Condor Dinner Collects Nearly $7,000
March 25, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
Bakersfield Condors News Release
Bakersfield, Calif. â The Bakersfield Condors hosted their fourth annual Tip-A-Condor dinner on Monday night at Buck Owens Crystal Palace, and raised $6,967 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The amount set a Bakersfield record for the event.
Held for the first time at the Crystal Palace and sponsored by KUZZ 107.9, the dinner featured Condors players serving as waiters and bartenders to raise tips, with an auction as well, and Condors Celebrity Karaoke to bring in more donations. All of the proceeds go towards the local chapter of the Make-A-Wish Foundation, which serves the southern San Joaquin Valley. Nearly 200 people were in attendance for the event.
The auction featured signed Condors "player packages", autographed merchandise and jerseys from the other teams in the West Coast Hockey League, as well as the stick used by Paul Willett to score his 1,000th career point, which brought in $1,025 by itself. The Crystal Palace donated signed merchandise as well, including an autographed Dwight Yoakam CD that went for $250.
It was just an ordinary charity dinner event until Condors C Shawn Byram brought down the house with a rousing rendition of "Wrapped Around", by Brad Paisley. Later, the entire team joined in with a young fan to sing, "Who Let the Dogs Out" and "Friends In Low Places", and Head Coach Paul Kelly's version of "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" was solid as well. The Condors Celebrity Karaoke raised approximately $1,500 by itself.
"The guys were really cute about serving us," said Linda Hartman, Director of Operations for the Bakersfield office of the Make-A-Wish Foundation. "They were so good about picking up the plates and checking on our drinks... It was a really fun night. We're really proud of the Condors, who took time out of their schedule to do something good for the community and always help support other organizations. We're very appreciative of what they've done for us.
"Our hosts and all the staff at the Crystal Palace were great," said Condors Community Relations Director John Ayre. "They volunteered to work for the night and we can't thank them enough. It was a successful event, and we'd like to thank the fans for helping to make such a great contribution to a worthwhile cause. I'd also like to thank Shawn Byram for his fantastic singing efforts. It really got the night going and he lived up to the advance billing.
The Condors host a pair of games this weekend at Centennial Garden. On Friday, the Anchorage Aces return to town, in a rematch of last Saturday's physical affair. The first 2,000 fans will receive a Condors CD wallet, sponsored by KUZZ 107.9 and Sierra Mist. On Saturday night, the Condors host Fresno at 7:00pm. The first 2,000 children 12 and under will receive a beanie doll of Cal, the Baby Condor, sponsored by KERO 23, KNZR 1560 and Frank's Brake.
