March 25, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL) News Release
PRINCETON, N.J. â The East Coast Hockey League and the Florida Everblades in association with The MeiGray Group announced on Tuesday that the proceeds from the online auction of game-worn jerseys from the 2003 Compuware/ECHL All-Star Game raised over $16,000 for the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute.
The Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute, operating the Meyer L. Prentis Comprehensive Cancer Center of metropolitan Detroit, is one of the nation's leading cancer research, treatment, education and outreach centers. The Institute is affiliated with the Detroit Medical Center and Wayne State University and supported by The United Way. The Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Foundation is a non-profit organization that secures, invests and administers funds to support cancer-related activities and endeavors of the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute.
The MeiGray Group, the official game-worn jersey source for the ECHL, developed and conducted the online auction from January 16-28. Fans were given the opportunity to bid on jerseys worn by all 42 players and Swampee, the Everblades mascot, during the first period of the 2003 Compuware/ECHL All-Star Game on January 21 at the TECO Arena in Estero, Fla.
"We are pleased to make this contribution to the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute on behalf of Compuware, the Florida Everblades and the East Coast Hockey League," said Glen Thornborough, Vice President of Marketing/Sales, East Coast Hockey League. "Barry Meisel and his staff at MeiGray have done a tremendous job each of the past two years coordinating and facilitating the jersey auction. We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to the ECHL fans for their participation and tremendous generosity in this fundraiser."
"For the second year in a row, the ECHL's great fans have shown their extreme generosity. They deserve most of the credit for making this such a successful charity event," said MeiGray President Barry Meisel. "And they share that credit with the Florida Everblades, who were terrific hosts to a terrific All-Star event."
The MeiGray Group (MGG), which has sold more than 18,000 game-worn jerseys since its inception in 1997, is partners with the ECHL in the ECHL-MGG Game-Worn Jersey Program and with the National Hockey League in the NHL-MGG Game-Worn Jersey Authentication Program. MeiGray also has working agreements with the National Football League's New York Giants and Philadelphia Eagles, and Major League Baseball's Texas Rangers.
