ESTERO, FL - The Florida Everblades (34-23-13) were defeated by the Charlotte Checkers (41-26-3) 5-2 in front of 5,696 at TECO Arena on Tuesday night. Charlotte forward Dusty Jamieson notched two goals in the Checkers victory. The Everblades fell into fourth place in the ECHL's Southeast Division after the Pee Dee Pride grabbed sole possession of third place after defeating the Augusta Lynx 5-0 on Tuesday night.
The Everblades struck first and made it 1-0 after forward Joe Blaznek blasted a slapshot from the point on the power play under the crossbar at the 15:43 mark of the first period.
The Checkers answered right back in the second period after forward David Evans slipped a backhand shot past Florida netminder Brian Leitza at the 4:39 mark. Charlotte then made it 2-1 on a 2 on 1 play that forward Eduard Pershin finished off at the 6:23 mark of the second period. The Checkers then increased their lead to 3-1 after an Everblades turn over wound up as a 2 on 1 against them and in the back of the net. Forward Dusty Jamieson finished the play after he tapped in an Eduard Pershin cross ice pass at the 8:31 mark.
The Checkers broke the scoring wide open and made it 4-1 in the third period after forward David Evans notched his second tally of the game. Everblades forward Ryan Murphy then made it 4-2 after he rifled a shot into the net after a bad clearing pass by the Charlotte netminder. The Checkers then finished the scoring late in the third period after forward Dusty Jamieson registered his second goal of the night.
Florida goaltender Brian Leitza (2-4-3) stopped 35 of 40 shots he faced while Charlotte netminder Colin Zulianello (7-2-1) stopped 34 of 36 shots he faced. The Everblades were 2 for 2 on the power play while the Checkers were 0 for 3.
The Blades battle the Columbia Inferno this weekend at TECO Arena on Friday and Saturday night. The puck drops at 7:30 PM on both nights.
