Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The TinCaps defeated the Lansing Lugnuts, 5-1, Sunday at Parkview Field. LHP Todd Privett worked five strong innings to help Fort Wayne to its third straight win.
Privett worked out of trouble for most of the day, stranding seven Lugnuts. For the day, Lansing left 12 men on base and went 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position.
The TinCaps closed to within a game of Great Lakes and West Michigan as they push for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Division.
Lugnuts LHP Egan Smith equaled Privett early, retiring the first ten TinCaps he faced. Cory Spangenberg legged out a bunt single in the fourth inning to break up the perfect game, then Rymer Liriano slashed an RBI double to right-center. Two batters later, Powers lofted an RBI single to left to make it 2-0.
In the sixth, Lansing scored its only run without a hit. Back-to-back walks and a hit batsman loaded the bases, then a walk to Markus Brisker brought a run in. RHP Adam Dominick rebounded to strike out the next two hitters to end the rally and keep it a 2-1 game.
Fort Wayne struck back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning. Rico Noel led off with a single, stole second and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Liriano. Luis Domoromo doubled off the left-field wall and scored when Powers hit an opposite-field RBI single to expand the lead to 4-1.
In the eighth, Tyler Stubblefield lifted a sacrifice fly to make it 5-1.
Privett (2-2) struck out six and gave up four hits in five innings to grab the victory. Smith (5-5) took the loss.
The TinCaps improved to 22-20 in the half, 52-59 for the season. Lansing fell to 25-17 since the all-star break, 63-46 on the year.
The TinCaps and Lugnuts (Class-A Toronto Blue Jays) continue the four-game series Monday at 7:05 p.m. TinCaps LHP Mark Hardy (8-8) gets the start opposite Lansing RHP Casey Lawrence (9-8).
