Beloit Sky Carp News Release
BELOIT, WI- Going into Sunday's game against the Quad Cities River Bandits, the Beloit Snappers had been struggling to find consistent offense. The Snappers hadn't scored more than four runs in a game since July 30. With one of the Midwest League's top pitchers taking the mound, the middle of the Snappers batting order took care of business en large part to Daniel Ortiz' big day.
Led by multi-hit games by Ortiz, Michael Gonzales and Lance Ray, the Snappers found their offensive rhythm Sunday and got steady pitching from starter Manual Soliman to defeat the River Bandits 8-2. Ortiz finished the game 3-for-5 with a home run and four RBI.
Early on, it looked like it could be a tough day for Snapper's starter Manuel Soliman. Soliman allowed back-to-back singles to Kolten Wong and Mike O'Neil to start the game, but managed to get out of the inning unscathed. On the day, Soliman allowed two runs on six hits over five innings of work.
In the fifth inning, the Snappers took an early 2-1 lead on Ortiz's tenth home run of the season. They padded their lead in the seventh inning behind Ray's RBI single.
For the River Bandits (26-16), Wong was the only one to finish with more than one hit. He was 2-for-4 on the day with a double and an RBI. On the mound, the Snappers knocked around Hector Corpas for four runs after a 30-minutes rain delay. Quad Cities starter Anthony Ferrera took the loss, surrendering three earned runs over six innings pitched.
The Snappers (19-23), Soliman picked up his sixth win of the year and the their bullpen continued to be dominant. Nelvin Fuentes, Adrian Salcedo and newest call-up, 2011 2nd-round draft pick Madison Boer combined for four innings of shut out baseball. They allowed just one hit in the eighth inning.
The "Brodie Trophy Player of the Game," goes to Daniel Ortiz who broke out of his slump with three hits (3-for-4) with a double, home run and four RBI. His season average is now .247. The Snappers combined for 12 hits on the day with eight runs and didn't commit an error.
The two teams will continue their four-game set tomorrow starting at 7:00pm. It will be another Monster Deal Monday sponsored by WJVL/WCLO.
