
Chiefs Score Eight Unanswered Runs to Top Kernels, 8-3

Peoria, IL - The Kernels took a 3-0 lead, but Peoria scored eight unanswered runs to top the Kernels 8-3. Kernels starter A.J. Schugel took a no-hitter into the sixth inning, but did not fare in the decision. Francis Larson gave the Kernels an early 1-0 lead in the second inning with a solo home run to left center field off of Chiefs starter Starling Peralta.
The Kernels added a run in the third inning to take a 2-0 lead. With two outs Peralta walked Rolando Gomez. Jeremy Cruz then singled to right. Ricky Alvarez followed with a RBI single to right center, scoring Gomez and giving the Kernels the two run advantage.
In the fourth inning, the Kernels scored a single run for the third straight inning to take a 3-0 lead. Justin Bass singled to lead off the inning and later came home on a RBI single by Wes Hatton. In the sixth inning, the Chiefs got their first three hits off of Schugel and score two runs to cut the Kernels lead to 3-2. Taiwan Easterling's RBI sacrifice fly to center scored Arismendy Alcantara, and Dustin Geiger's RBI triple scored Ben Klafczynski. Schugel went six innings, allowing two runs on three hits. He struck out six and walked none.
Peoria scored an unearned run in the seventh inning to tie the game 3-3. Rafael Valdes reached on an error by Kernels shortstop Gomez and later came home to score on a RBI single by Klafczynski.
The Chiefs brought ten men to the plate and scored five runs in the eighth inning to put the game away. A RBI double by Richard Jones scored Rubi Silva and gave Peoria the 4-3 lead. Five consecutive hits in the inning scored four more runs. RBI singles by Valdes, Alcantara, and Easterling, as well as a RBI double by Micah Gibbs gave Peoria an 8-3 lead. Tyler Kehrer (2-1) took the loss in relief for the Kernels. He went one inning and allowed five runs on six hits.
Erik Gregersen pitched 0.2 inning for the Kernels, allowing one unearned run on no hits while walking one. Ty Kelley pitched 0.1 inning, allowing no runs on two hits. Ramon Garcia (1-0) picked up the win for Peoria, allowing no runs on no hits while striking out three in three innings of relief. Chiefs starter Starling Peralta went five innings and allowed three runs on seven hits. He struck out five and walked one. Roderick Pichardo pitched a scoreless ninth inning for Peoria, allowing one hit.
