Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release

South Bend, IN - Derek Dietrich and Steve Tinoco combined for seven hits and eight RBI to lead the Hot Rods (22-20, 63, 49) to a 14-3 thrashing of the South Bend Silver Hawks (19-23, 53-58) on Sunday afternoon. The Hot Rods set season-highs in runs, hits, and margin of victory to even the four-game series at one game each heading into the work week on Monday.

Dietrich and Tinoco both struck in the first inning to set the tone for the Hot Rods. After Cody Rogers walked, Dietrich smacked his first double, chasing Rogers home for a 1-0 lead. After a groundout and a strikeout, Tinoco brought home Dietrich with a two-out single to right field, pushing the lead to 2-0. Mayo Acosta then followed with another home run - his second since his return to BG - a two-run shot to pad the lead to 4-0.

After South Bend chipped away with solo runs against George Jensen in the second and third, Dietrich led another rally in the fourth. With two outs and men at the corners, Dietrich launched a two-out home run to right, his 16th of the season to give the Hot Rods a 7-2 lead.

The Hot Rods added three more runs over the next two innings to pad their lead. Julio Cedeno led off the fifth with his eighth home run, a solo shot to make it 8-2. An inning later Phil Wunderlich drove home one a run with a single to right field for his 74th run batted in. Later in the frame, an unearned run scored on a dropped pop-up off the bat of Cedeno to stretch the cushion to 10-2.

That run support was more than enough for Jensen, who turned in his fourth strong outing in a row. He pitched five innings allowing a pair of runs on five hits and one walk. He struck out two while improving to 11-4 on the season. He has been particularly good in his last four outings, allowing four earned runs in 22.0 innings for a 1.64 ERA during that stretch.

After South Bend cut into the lead at 10-3, the Hot Rods poured on four more runs over the eighth and ninth innings. Tinoco picked up his second RBI in the eighth, part of a two run frame. An inning later, with the bases loaded, Tinoco laced a two-run single to right field to cap the scoring at 14-3.

Dietrich finished the game with a single, two doubles, a home run, and four RBI, tying his career-high with four hits. Tinoco had three hits, a sacrifice fly, and a new personal best with four runs batted in. All told, every member of the line-up reached base; eight men had hits while eight of nine scored at least one run. In addition to Tinoco and Dietrich, Rogers, Wunderlich, Cedeno, Acosta, and Estrada all had multi-hit games.

The teams now meet up for game three on Monday night at 6 PM CDT. RHP Jason McEachern (1-1, 4.91) takes the ball against South Bend RHP J.R. Bradley (4-13, 4.86). You can follow the broadcast with Tom Gauthier beginning at 5:35 PM CDT on 1340 AM WBGN and www.bghotrods.com.

The Hot Rods return home on Saturday, August 13 to begin a six-game home stand against South Bend and the Lansing Lugnuts (Toronto Blue Jays). The home stand begins with postgame fireworks following the 7:05 PM game on August 13. For tickets, visit www.bghotrods.com.
