Dayton Dragons News Release
Eastlake, Ohio-Tanner Robles allowed only one hit and one unearned run over six innings as the Dayton Dragons defeated the Lake County Captains 4-1 on Sunday night in a game shortened by rain to six and one-half innings. The Dragons improved to 27-15 in the second half and extended their lead to two games over second place Lansing in the Eastern Division of the Midwest League.
The Dragons took the lead in the second inning on a line drive home run by Jaren Matthews with the bases empty. It was Matthews' fifth homer of the year. Ronald Torreyes led off the Dragons fourth inning with his third home run of the season to make it 2-0.
Lake County got on the board in the fifth when Ronny Rodriguez reached on a throwing error by Robles and scored on a double to right-center field by former Wright State star Aaron Fields to make it 2-1.
The Dragons scored two runs in the top of the seventh. Chris Berset singled to center and went to second on Matthews' hit to left. Frank Pfister's sacrifice bunt advanced the runners to second and third with one out. Theo Bowe hit a ground ball to second and Berset beat the throw home to make it 3-1. Bowe was then picked off first base, but as the Captains executed the run-down play, Matthews raced in to score to give Dayton a 4-1 lead.
After the final out in the top of the seventh, heavy rain forced a stoppage of play and the game could not be resumed.
Robles (4-8) walked two and struck out three to earn the win, allowing only one unearned run. The double by Fields in the fifth was the only hit of the game against Robles.
The Dragons finished with seven hits. Matthews was 2 for 3 with the home run and scored twice. Berset was also 2 for 3 with a run scored.
The Dragons continue the series with the Captains on Monday at 7:00 p.m. (WONE 980 AM). Mitch Clarke (2-1, 1.88) will start for Dayton against Lake County's Mike Goodnight (5-10, 4.57). The next home game is Saturday, August 13 vs. Lake County at Fifth Third Field.
