South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
South Bend, IN - The South Bend Silver Hawks allowed a season high 14 runs on a season high 18 hits, falling to the Bowling Green Hot Rods by a rather large 14-3 margin on Sunday afternoon at Coveleski Stadium.
The Hot Rods jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning against Bradin Hagens (LP, 6-5) and never looked back. Bowling Green scored runs in six of their nine at-bats, leaving the Silver Hawks pitching staff baffled.
The Hot Rods had hits from eight of their nine batters and RBIs from five different players in the big offensive outburst. Derek Dietrich led the way with four hits and four RBIs while Steve Tinoco added three hits and four RBIs. Dietrich had a three run homer in the fourth, while Ryan Acosta hit a two-run blast in the first and Julio Cedeno added a solo shot in the fifth inning.
Hagens was charged with seven runs over 4.0 innings, Keith Cantwell (ND) gave up three runs in 1.2 innings, and Jeremy Erben (ND) allowed four runs in 2.0 innings. Only Victor Capellan (ND) escaped without allowing runs in his 1.1 innings, but he did allow an inherited runner to cross the plate.
South Bend was led offensively by Roberto Ortiz who had three hits and two runs scored, stretching his hitting streak to 11 games. It's the third time a Silver Hawks player has hit in 11 straight games this year, and it's tied for the second longest streak on the team this season behind Mike Freeman at 15 straight in late May/early June.
Niko Gallego also added two hits and a RBI while Roberto Rodriguez and Jhoan Pimentel accounted for the other runs batted in for the Silver Hawks.
George Jensen (WP, 11-4) benefitted from all the runs, earning the win for Bowling Green.
Prior to the game, the Silver Hawks promoted pitcher Blake Cooper to high-A Visalia and outfielder Chris Jarrett informed the team he was retiring from pro baseball.
Game three of the four game series takes place on a Block Party Monday at Coveleski Stadium with first pitch slated for 7:00 PM Eastern Time. RHP J.R. Bradley (4-13, 4.86 ERA) will start for the Silver Hawks against Bowling Green's RHP Jason McEachern (1-1, 4.91 ERA). Pre-game coverage begins at 6:40 PM Eastern Time on www.sportsjuice.com and www.silverhawks.com.
