Clinton LumberKings News Release

Burlington, IA - Clinton right-hander Stephen Kohlscheen, 1-3 with a 6.39 ERA in 16 outings as a LumberKing before a midseason demotion to short-A Everett, came roaring back with authority on Sunday afternoon at Community Field. Kohlscheen scattered three hits and two walks over 6.0 scoreless innings, striking out six as he led the LumberKings to a 4-1 win over the Burlington Bees. Stefen Romero went 2-for-4 and drove in three runs to lead the Kings' offense.

Kohlscheen (W, 2-3) allowed a leadoff double to Tony Thompson in the second inning but retired the next three hitters to strand him, then retired seven more in a row including three strikeouts in a dominant fourth inning. The Bees put runners at first and second against him with two outs in the fifth, but he recovered to fan Tyreace House on a breaking ball away, ending the threat.

Bees' right-hander Nate Long, 3-0 against the Kings in four previous outings this season, kept Clinton off the board over the first two innings. He finally found trouble in the third inning as Mike McGee coaxed a two-out walk, Julio Morban lined the Kings' first hit into center and Kevin Rivers walked to load the bases. Romero followed with a smash single out of the reach of shortstop Wade Kirkland, scoring both McGee and Morban to give the LumberKings a 2-0 lead.

Long (L, 6-6) yielded just those two runs on four hits over 6.0 innings, walking five while striking out six. Left-hander Max Peterson took over in the seventh inning and was greeted by McGee's first-pitch opposite-field home run to right. The drive over the high wall was McGee's second home run of the season and raised the Clinton lead to 3-0.

The Kings made it 4-0 against right-hander Sean Murphy in the top of the ninth as Morban lined a double into the left-field corner, Rivers walked and Romero rolled a single into left to score Morban from second.

Submarining right-hander John Taylor pitched a perfect seventh and then worked out of a minor jam in the eighth, making a diving catch off the mound on Nino Leyja's bunt attempt to end the inning. Taylor (H, 1) walked Josh Whitaker before getting an out in the ninth, but was then taken out in favor of right-hander Tyler Burgoon.

Burgoon surrendered a double to Douglas Landaeta that ended the shutout, but he struck out Royce Consigli looking for the second out. Kirkland rolled over on a ground ball to shortstop Anthony Phillips that looked to be an easy final out, but Phillips overthrew Mickey Wiswall at first base. Wiswall didn't give up on the play, throwing home to catcher Carlton Tanabe as Landaeta took a wide turn at third base. Tanabe tossed down to Carlos Ramirez who applied the game-ending tag on Landaeta.

McGee finished 1-for-4 with the home run, two runs scored and an RBI, while Morban also contributed a 2-for-3 game including two runs scored for the LumberKings. Clinton gains a game on Kane County (25-17) for first place in the West as the Cougars lost in Wisconsin. The Kings also will maintain at least a 3.0 game lead on Beloit for the Wild Card spot.

Landaeta finished 1-for-4 with a double and RBI for the Bees.

The LumberKings (22-20) and Bees (14-28) continue the series with game three tomorrow night at Community Field, first pitch scheduled for 6:30 PM. Left-hander Anthony Fernandez (4-3, 3.11) gets the starting nod for Clinton, while Burlington counters with right-hander Josh Bowman (7-4, 3.64).
