Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Jonathan Galvez raced home through pouring rain on a wild pitch in the 10th inning to cap a furious rally and a 5-4 TinCaps win over the Lansing Lugnuts, Saturday at Parkview Field.
The TinCaps were shut out through eight innings, but scored four in the 9th to tie it and another in the 10th to win the game.
Fort Wayne RHP Dexter Carter gutted it out through six innings. He allowed a solo home run to Brad McElroy in the top of the 1st and an RBI single to Ryan Goins in the 3rd, but retired eight straight batters and didn't allow another run for the rest of the afternoon.
Lansing scored another run in the top of the 8th as RHP Stiven Osuna issued a bases-loaded walk to make it 3-0. In the 9th, Ryan Schimpf hit a two-out double, stole third and scored on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Goins.
In the bottom of the 9th, Everett Williams led off with a double near the left-field line. A flyout moved him to third, then Jason Hagerty yanked an RBI double down the right-field line to cut it to a 4-1 deficit. Edinson Rincon stroked a single to put runners at first and third. Then, Rymer Liriano hit a grounder to the second baseman which was bobbled, allowing a run to score and runners to advance to first and second. Down 4-2, Griffin Benedict hit a hard grounder to third that went between the third baseman's legs and into left field, scoring another run. A passed ball moved the runners up to second and third, then Bo Davis tied the game with an RBI groundout. A flyout ended the inning.
In the 10th, Galvez led off with a single up the middle, stole second and went to third on a wild pitch by Lugnuts RHP Casey Beck. At that point, sheets of rain started falling. With Nate Freiman at the plate, Beck uncorked a wild pitch to the backstop and Galvez scored with a head-first slide to end the game.
Beck (0-1) took the loss while RHP Nick Schumacher (1-1) was the winning pitcher.
The TinCaps snapped a four-game losing streak to improve to 14-15. Lansing dropped to 17-13.
The TinCaps and Lugnuts (Class-A Toronto Blue Jays) finish the three-game series Sunday at 3:05 p.m. TinCaps RHP John Hussey (2-0) goes to the mound against Lansing RHP Ryan Shopshire (2-1).
