Peoria Chiefs News Release

Geneva, IL - The chilly weather cooled off the Peoria Chiefs bats Saturday night in a 5-0 loss to the Kane County Cougars to even the series at one win apiece. The loss drops the first-place Chiefs to 19-11 on the season as the two teams play the rubber game of the series Sunday afternoon at Elfstrom Stadium. The Chiefs fell behind in the first inning as starter Jonathan Nagel struggled to find the strike zone. In his second outing since coming off the disabled list, Nagel gave up consecutive singles to Connor Crumbliss and Tyreace House to start the inning. Anthonoy Aliotti walked to load the bases and Nagel walked Leonardo Gil to force in a run. After two outs Franklin Hernandez singled to make it 3-0 and Nagel walked Mike Gilmartin to reload the bases. With Nagel at his pitch count after eight batters, Ryan Searle came out of the Chiefs bullpen and escaped the inning when Juan Nunez bounced into a fielders' choice. The Chiefs were held scoreless through six innings by left-hander Justin Marks. Peoria had two runners on in the second, fourth, fifth and sixth innings but failed to score each time. Mark struck out five and walked two while leaving with a 4-0 lead after six. Kane County extended their lead in the seventh against Chiefs reliever Larry Suarez. With one out, Chiefs centerfielder Jose Valdez turned a single into a double on an ill-advised diving attempt on a ball hit by Hernandez. Gilmartin double home Hernandez to make it 5-0 before Suarez retired the next two Cougars hitters. Nagel (0-2) allowed three runs on three hits and three walks in just 2/3 of an inning. Searle allowed a run on four hits over 4 1/3 innings of work. The Australian native walked a career-high five and also struck out five. Suarez allowed a run on two hits over two innings while striking out three and walking one.
