Clinton LumberKings News Release
Davenport, IA - Edgar Lara's Grand Slam snapped a 1-1 tie in the third inning and proved to be the difference Saturday night at Modern Woodmen Park as the Quad Cities River Bandits handed the Clinton LumberKings a 7-1 loss.
Left-hander Jon Hesketh served up the slam and a solo home run to Niko Vasquez as well, exiting with five earned runs over 4.0 innings. Hesketh (L, 2-2) had yielded only two earned runs in his previous three starts, but struggled against the Bandits lineup for the second time this season. Quad Cities scored nine runs against him in a no-decision on April 16.
Clinton tied the game at 1-1 in the third inning as Matt Cerione lined a single to left, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Gabriel Noriega and scored on a throwing error by shortstop Ryan Jackson. The LumberKings nearly had a 2-1 lead as Vinnie Catricala lined a two-out single to left, but James Jones was thrown out trying to score from second as Ryde Rodriguez fired a strike to catcher Ivan Castro.
The 1-1 tie wouldn't last long as Hesketh gave up a double to Vasquez, hit Jason Stidham with a pitch and walked Rodriguez to set the table for Lara's slam.
The Bandits added a run in the sixth as Castro doubled and came around to score on two errors by catcher Steven Baron. Quad Cities then pushed the lead to 7-1 in the seventh as Stidham doubled and scored on a single by Matt Adams.
Left-hander Dan Calhoun (W, 1-0) allowed only an unearned run on three hits over 5.0 innings, striking out five. Right-handers Joe Kelly and Aaron Terry combined for 4.0 scoreless innings.
Catricala and Nick Franklin each finished 2-for-4 in the losing effort for Clinton.
The LumberKings (13-17) conclude the commuter series against Quad Cities (18-12) tomorrow afternoon at Modern Woodmen Park, first pitch scheduled for 1:00 PM. Left-hander Jimmy Gillheeney (1-3, 2.87) is slated to make his team-leading seventh start of the season. Listen to the game on AM 1390 KCLN in Clinton or live on the web at 1390kcln.com.
