South Bend wins over Dragons

South Bend, Ind.-South Bend starting pitcher Chase Anderson fired a five-hit shutout as the Silver Hawks defeated the Dayton Dragons 3-0 in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday night. The Dragons fell to 13-15 with the loss. South Bend improved to 14-15.

Anderson (2-3) did not allow a runner past second base over his seven-inning complete game performance. He struck out eight and walked no one. All five hits against him were singles.

The Silver Hawks took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a solo home run to right field by Bobby Stone, his second of the season. South Bend added two more runs in the fourth, collecting five hits in the inning against Dragons starting pitcher Josh Ravin, to jump out to a 3-0 lead.

Meanwhile, Anderson shut down the Dayton offense. The Dragons put the first two hitters on base in both the third and sixth innings but could not come up with a big hit.

Ravin (1-2) suffered the loss. In five innings of work, he allowed nine hits and three earned runs with one walk and three strikeouts.

Mark Fleury was 2 for 3 for Dayton. Henry Rodriguez, Didi Gregorius, and Shane Carlson each had one hit.

The Dragons will play South Bend in the second game of the doubleheader later tonight. Blair Carson (0-0, 0.00) will start for Dayton against South Bend's Keny Sosa (1-0, 2.25). The Dragons next home game is Monday, May 10 against the Fort Wayne TinCaps at Fifth Third Field.
