Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
Fort Wayne, IN - The Fort Wayne TinCaps grinded out a win over the Lansing Lugnuts, 8-6, Friday at Parkview Field. It gave manager Doug Dascenzo his 210th win as a skipper in Fort Wayne, passing now-Padres hitting coach Randy Ready. Allan Dykstra pounded out three hits and closer Brad Brach induced the final five outs of the game to notch his longest save of the year.
RHP Erik Davis labored through five innings, allowing one hit in each frame, and managed to pick up the win. In the 1st , he allowed a run on Johermyn Chavez's single, but stranded the bases loaded to escape further damage.
In the 3rd , Lansing's Mike McDade doubled to deep left-center to plate Chavez and make it 2-0. Davis again worked out of trouble, retiring the next two batters to keep it a two-run game.
From there, the TinCaps plated seven unanswered runs, scoring single tallies in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth frames. Drew Cumberland had a two-out RBI single in the 3rd , Kevin Hansen did the same in the 4th to tie it at 2-2 and Jaff Decker duplicated the feat to put the TinCaps ahead, 3-2 in the 5th .
In the 6th , Adam Zornes doubled into the right-field corner to make it a 4-2 game. The TinCaps scored three more runs in the 7th to take a seemingly commanding 7-2 advantage.
Lansing fired back with four runs in the top of the 8th inning against LHP Zach Herr to make it a one-run game. With one out and the tying run at second base, Brach induced a rally-killing double play to keep the TinCaps in front, 7-6.
Fort Wayne tacked on a run in the 8th on an odd play. Decker hooked a double into the right-field corner. The throw went over third base; Luis Fernandez caught the ball and his momentum carried him into the Lansing dugout. The play was correctly ruled a two-base error and Decker trotted around to score an insurance run.
Brach came back out for the 9th and faced the minimum to nail down his 30th save. Davis (13-6) was the winning pitcher while Lansing RHP Jason Roenicke (1-4) was saddled with the loss.
The TinCaps upped their record to 84-40 for the season, 39-15 in the second half. Lansing dipped to 47-75 on the year, 21-32 for the half.
The TinCaps continue the four-game series against the Lugnuts (Class-A Toronto Blue Jays) on Saturday at 7:05pm at Parkview Field. Fort Wayne RHP Stiven Osuna (9-7) is opposed by Lansing RHP Ryan Shopshire (0-0).
