Dayton Dragons News Release
DAYTON, OH- The Dayton Dragons, in conjunction with the Dayton Development Coalition, will host the second of two "Hometown Heroes Celebration Nights" at Fifth Third Field on Saturday, August 22, as part of the 7:05 p.m. game against the West Michigan Whitecaps.
As part of the season-long celebration of the Hometown Heroes program, the DDC will take time to pay tribute to all service men and women associated with Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and Springfield Air National Guard Base.
"Many people often talk about athletes and movie stars as their heroes, but the real heroes are those that serve this country each and every day to protect our freedoms, liberties and way of life," said Robert Murphy, Dragons team president. "The Dayton Development Coalition and the Dragons are both honored to host these men and women of the military who defend our freedoms both locally and overseas."
Festivities for the Celebration Night will begin with military displays on the Fifth Third Field plaza at 5:30 p.m. During the game, Lt. Gen. Tom Owen, Commander, USAF Aeronautical Systems Center at WPAFB, will address the fans and will throw out the ceremonial first pitch. Colonel Bradley Spacy, 88th Air Base Wing and Installation Commander at WPAFB, will be on hand to welcome home recently returned Airmen from deployment.
Pre-game ceremonies will include displaying a giant American flag by children of Airmen, releasing of white doves, the Wright-Patterson Honor Guard presenting the colors, and the singing of the National Anthem by MSgt. Shawn Stanley of the USAF Band of Flight.
Other planned activities for the evening include a flag presentation to recent veterans by Congressman Mike Turner, a performance by the Northmont High School Drill Team and the singing of God Bless America.
