Great Lakes Loons News Release
SOUTH BEND, IN - One night after pounding out 22 hits and matching a franchise record with 18 runs, South Bend starting pitcher Ryan Cook limited the Great Lakes Loons to only a run on four hits over eight innings as the Silver Hawks topped the Loons, 4-1, on Friday night at Stanley Coveleski Regional Stadium.
Cook outdueled Bobby Blevins, who was again the tough-luck loser for the Loons. Locked in a 1-1 game into the bottom of the seventh inning, Blevins issued three consecutive walks to force in the go-ahead run and usher his exit from the game. Luis Garcia issued another bases-loaded walk to the first man he faced and gave up an infield single before getting Alfredo Marte to fly out to end the frame. All four runs were charged to Blevins, who allowed only four hits in his 6.2 innings of work but also issued a career-high four walks.
The Loons lone run came in the fifth, when Matt Wallach scored Kyle Russell with a two-out RBI single to right field. Russell helped manufacture the run by walking to start the inning, stealing second and taking third on a fly ball out to right field.
Both teams squandered great scoring chances before the decisive bottom of the seventh inning. The Silver Hawks loaded the bases with one out in their half of the fifth, but Blevins got a force out at the plate and a groundout to short to escape trouble. Dee Gordon led off the Loons half of the sixth with a triple, but he was thrown out at the plate on a one-out grounder to third by Anthony Hatch.
Justin Mace pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to earn his ninth save in 10 chances for South Bend.
The Loons and Silver Hawks continue their series on Saturday night at 6:30 p.m. The Loons send left-hander Aaron Miller (1-1, 2.81) to the mound opposite Silver Hawks' southpaw Keny Sosa (0-2, 2.45. Pre-game coverage from Coveleski Stadium begins at 6:00 p.m. on ESPN 100.9 FM and at loons.com.
