Cougars Lose a Wild One in Beloit

BELOIT, Wisc. - The Kane County Cougars rallied for five runs Friday night in the top of the eighth inning to take a 6-5 lead against the Beloit Snappers, only to allow four runs in the bottom half and fall 9-6 at Pohlman Field. The Cougars have lost six of their last seven and are six games under .500.
Down 5-1 through seven innings, the Cougars scored five in the eighth against the Beloit bullpen. Chris Berroa and Tyler Ladendorf each drove in a run, Jeremy Barfield belted a game-tying two-run double and Franklin Hernandez delivered an RBI single for a 6-5 lead.
The advantage did not last long. The Cougars' bullpen had retired 15 straight hitters entering the bottom of the eighth, but Beloit scored four times against Daniel Thomas (0-1) to make it 9-6. Billy Bullock (3-0) ended up with the win, and Daniel Berlind posted his first save. Cougars starter Murphy Smith gave up five runs in 1 1/3 innings, forcing the Cougars to go to the bullpen early. Matt Fitts and Josue Selenis combined for 4 2/3 shutout work, and Thomas logged a flawless seventh before the eighth-inning trouble.
The Cougars (24-30, 65-59) and Snappers (22-32, 50-74) continue the four-game set Saturday night at 7 CT. Kenny Smalley (9-6, 2.46) will face Liam Hendriks (1-4, 3.99).
