Fort Wayne TinCaps (21-27) @ Lansing Lugnuts (32-17)
LHP Osvaldo Hernandez vs. RHP Turner Larkins
Sunday, May 27 - Cooley Law School Stadium (Lansing, Mich.) - First Pitch 1:05 p.m. (Game 49)
LISTEN: ESPN Radio 1380 & 100.9 FM / TuneIn / TinCapsRadio.com
SATURDAY NIGHT: The TinCaps tallied a season-high 16 hits, but saw a 10-3 lead after 5 innings slip away in a 12-11 loss in 10 innings. Fort Wayne led 10-5 entering the 10th but Lansing scored 5 times, including 4 runs with 2 outs, to equalize.
UNLUCKY NUMBER 7: The TinCaps last lost a game when leading by 7 runs was July 16, 2016 against the Cedar Rapids Kernels (Twins). At home, Fort Wayne led 7-1 after 4 innings but wound up losing, 13-10, in 10 frames. That Saturday night game was also memorable for being like a scene out of "The Sandlot." Fort Wayne's annual 3 Rivers Festival was coming to an end that night. Per tradition, that means fireworks shot off the Indiana Michigan Power Center (the city's tallest building). Parkview Field offers an optimal view to see the show. Well, even though the game started earlier than usual at 6:35 pm and the fireworks were delayed because of the game, eventually they couldn't wait any longer and the 20-minute fireworks show began a few blocks away at 10:10 during the 9th inning. In dramatic fashion, the TinCaps scored twice in the bottom of the 9th to tie the game, thanks in part to an error. The game took 4 hours, 26 minutes to play. Of note, current TinCap Carlos Belen started at third base and hit a home run in the 3rd inning.
OSVALDOOOOOO: In his first 2 starts of the season (in the cold), Osvaldo Hernandez struggled some, with a 6.48 ERA after his first 8.1 IP. Over his last 5 starts, Hernandez has posted a 1.30 ERA. That's the lowest in the Midwest League during this stretch that began on April 21. In 27.2 innings, he's struck out 29 and walked just 5. Last time out, he was his best yet with 6 scoreless innings at West Michigan on Tuesday.
FEELING EXTRA: The TinCaps have 17 extra-base hits over their last 3 games. Fort Wayne matched a season high with 7 extra-base hits on Thursday @ West Michigan and again Saturday night. (The team also tallied 7 XBHs on April 13 @ Bowling Green.) Over the last 3 games, the 'Caps have hit 6 triples, 10 doubles, and 1 home run.
LEAGUE LEADERS: Jeisson Rosario is 3rd in OBP (.423), tied for 5th in walks (34), tied for 7th in runs (32)... Esteury Ruiz is tied for 10th in triples (3).
ADVANCED STATS LEAGUE LEADERS: Jeisson Rosario is 7th in Line Drive % (27%), and tied for 7th in BB% (19%)... Luis Campusano has the 8th lowest K% (13%).
FORT CONNECTION: Fort Wayne native Eric Wedge who currently serves as Toronto's Minor League Field Coordinator is with the Lugnuts for this series. Wedge, a Northrop High School grad, played in the majors for the Red Sox and Rockies from 1991-94 and managed the Indians from 2003-09 and the Mariners from 2011-13.
IMPROVED PITCHING: In 24 games in April, the TinCaps hit .239 while scoring 115 runs (4.7 R/G). Through 24 games in May, the TinCaps have batted .237, scoring 96 runs (4.0 R/G). The TinCaps pitching staff has reversed the script in May after holding a 5.62 ERA in April to a 3.33 ERA through in May. The 3.13 ERA in the month of May-among the best in the MWL.
ROAD WOES: The TinCaps are 14-11 at Parkview Field this year and 7-16 on the road. Fort Wayne has hit .252 at home compared to .223 on the road. The team actually has a better ERA on the road with a 4.21 mark compared to a 4.52 ERA at home.
THE ROAD AHEAD: The TinCaps are on an 8-game road trip after 4 against the Whitecaps, they now play 4 against the Lansing Lugnuts. This is Fort Wayne's longest road trip of the first half. The team's longest trip of the season will come Aug. 18-27 when they are scheduled for 10 consecutive road games at Lansing (3), Great Lakes (3), and South Bend (4).
