South Bend Cubs News Release
South Bend, IN: The South Bend Cubs came into Sunday night in 5th place in the Midwest League Eastern Division after leapfrogging the Fort Wayne TinCaps and Lake County Captains last night. Tonight after beating the West Michigan Whitecaps 5-3 for their third straight win, the Cubs will have a chance to sweep the third place Whitecaps tomorrow afternoon.
After a 11-0 shutout win last night, the Whitecaps wasted no time getting on the board on Sunday with two early runs off of starter Jesus Camargo in the top of the 1st inning. The Cubs wasted little time getting back in the game as they matched the Whitecaps two with a pair of their own.
The starter Camargo settled in after the first inning. Both runs allowed ended up being unearned as the Cubs made three total errors in the game, with two of them in the 1st inning. Camargo was forced to take a no-decision, but he gave the Cubs a great opportunity to get the victory.
Left hander Manuel Rondon earned the win with three scoreless innings of scoreless ball. Rondon struck out five batters. After winning 14 games with South Bend last year, Rondon is off to a good start in 2018 at 1-0. Brian Glowicki picked up his seventh save of the season as he finished the 9th. Glowicki now sits at second place in the Midwest League in saves.
The winning runs for South Bend came from innings six through seven as the Cubs scored three off of reliever Max Green. Green took the loss to bring his record to 1-3. In the bottom of the 6th, Nelson Velazquez drove in his fourth run of the year on a RBI single past the diving third baseman Colby Bortles.
Later in the inning, Chris Singleton crushed a long fly ball towards the left field corner. It was off the high part of the wall off the 336 feet sign. On a long bounce off the fence, Christian Donahue scored to make the game 4-2. The was the eventual game winning run. Donahue continues his tear over the past week with South Bend. His hitting streak has now reached eight straight games.
West Michigan added a run off of Glowicki in the 9th but the Cubs held on for the 5-3 win. With the victory, the Cubs improve to 22-26 with win number three in row. They will have the chance for the four game sweep tomorrow afternoon at 2:05 p.m. Right hander Javier Assad is scheduled to take the mound in the key game four.
