Burlington Bees News Release

Burlington, IA. - It was a different feeling tonight, as the Burlington Bees (20-27) suffered a 10-5 loss in game two of their series vs the Beloit Snappers (21-23). Both teams had a great day hitting the ball, but Beloit managed to get runs on the board thanks to four home runs. Ty Damron (2-1) earned his second win of the year, throwing one and a third innings of relief, allowing just two hits and a walk. Mitchell Traver started the game for Burlington, but went just four innings, allowing four runs on seven hits, and giving up two home runs, and fell to 3-3. Seth Martinez earned his third save for the Snappers, going the final three innings, allowing two runs on four hits in the ninth inning.

Both teams strike in the third

After a quiet first two innings, Beloit got things going in the top of the third. Trace Loehr lead off the inning with his second triple of the season, and Jesus Lopez scored him on a single past third basemen Julio Garcia, giving Beloit a 1-0 lead. However, Kevin Williams Jr quickly turned the game around in the bottom of the third. Torii Hunter lead off the inning with a single, and Franklin Torres drew a walk, putting runners on first and second. The Williams Jr shot his second home run of the season to left, giving the Bees a 3-1 lead. However, Beloit would quickly respond, and take the game.

Hargrove gets the Scrappers going

With one out in the top of the fourth, Hunter Hargrove hit his first of three home runs to left, and next batter Logan Farrar sent a home run to right, tying the game at 3-3. After back to back singles from Jordan Devencenzi and Trace Loehr, with runners on the corners, Jesus Lopez grounded into a fielder's choice to short stop, scoring Devencenzi, making the score 4-3.

Hargrove hit his second home run in the seventh, but this one was worth three runs, giving the Snappers a 7-3 lead. In the ninth, Hargrove hit another three run home run to left, for his third of the game, giving Beloit a 10-3 lead. Burlington would add two runs in the bottom of the ninth on Torii Hunter's eighth double of the season, and on a single from Keinner Pina. Torres would fly out to right to end the game, giving Beloit the 10-5 victory.

Despite loss, Bees offense still looked good

Beloit had a great comeback night, after only scoring one run in yesterday's game. Although it felt like a blowout loss, Burlington's offense still put on a great performance. Burlington finished the game with 14 hits tonight, and had two players with three hits, and three players with two hits. The big thing that hurt Burlington, was not getting ahead in the first inning. Leonardo Rivas lead off the first with a single, and Hunter got him to third on a double, giving the Bees runners on first and second with no outs. However, Pina and Torres both hit pop ups in the infield, and Williams Jr struck out, giving the Bees zero runs in the inning. If Burlington puts one or two runs on the board early, the outcome of tonight's game could have been very different.

Looking ahead

Bees will look to bounce back tomorrow in the third game of the four game series vs Beloit. Burlington will start Isaac Mattson and Beloit will go with Jean Ruiz. Mattson is 2-2 this season with a 4.41 ERA. Mattson earned his second win last week, pitching five shutout innings vs Clinton. Ruiz has struggled this year, he is 0-3 with a 5.40 ERA in six starts. Ruiz has the second worst ERA on the Snappers, and has allowed the second most earned runs, so he will look to shut down the Bees hot offense. Burlington will look to get back to the pitching they had in game one, hoping Hargrove doesn't go 4-5 with seven RBI's and three home runs tomorrow.
