West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
SOUTH BEND, IN - The West Michigan Whitecaps have followed up their six-game winning streak with a four-game losing skid after a 5-3 loss to the South Bend Cubs on a 93-degree Sunday night at Four Winds Field.
The 'Caps have now scored five runs in their last three games and watch their road record fall to 9-14.
West Michigan opened the scoring and looked paced for a big night with a two-run first. Jose Azocar traveled home on a Jordan Pearce double and scored on an RBI-single by Colby Bortles to take a 2-0 lead. The Cubs responded with a pair of their own when Miguel Amaya got hit with a pitch with the bases loaded, and Christian Donahue lofted a sacrifice fly to tie the score in the bottom of the frame. The score remained the same until three-straight singles forced home the go-ahead run in the sixth and Chris Singleton doubled to bring the score to 4-2. Amaya singled to score a run and extend the Cubs lead to 5-2 in the seventh. In the ninth, Rey Rivera laced his first triple of the season to bring the "Caps within a run at 5-3 but came no closer. With runners at the corners and one out, Dylan Rosa grounded into a game-ending double play.
"Caps reliever Max Green (1-3) allowed three runs on six hits in 1.2 innings to take his third loss. Green came on after starter Dane Myers allowed two runs in 5.1 innings and tied a career-high with six strikeouts in receiving a no-decision. Myers left the game after flipping over the Cubs first-base dugout railing while attempting to catch a pop up in the sixth. Lefty Manuel Rondon (1-0) struck out five Whitecaps in three perfect innings in recording his first win, while Brian Glowicki earned his seventh save of the season. The loss drops the Whitecaps record to 26-23, while the Cubs improve to 22-26. Joey Morgan had two hits to lead the Whitecaps offense in the defeat.
