Burlington Bees News Release
Burlington, IA. - The temperature got up to almost 100 degrees, but that didn't stop the Burlington Bees (21-27) from dominating the Beloit Snappers (21-24) in a 9-0 victory. Isaac Mattson delivered his second consecutive scoreless start, going five innings, allowing just three hits and threw two strikeouts. It was a rough start for Snappers starter Ivan Andueza who suffered his second loss of the season, allowing seven runs on six hits, and walking two batters. Brett Hanewich and James Ziemba both had great relief outings once again, pitching the final four innings, and only allowing one hit.
Big third inning crushes Snappers spirit
A long and exciting third inning helped the Bees get out to a big lead, and with the high temperature, Beloit couldn't find a way to get back in the game. Jimmy Barnes had his first at bat with the Bees to start the third and was hit by a pitch. Connor Fitzsimons doubled to right in his first at bat with the Bees, scoring Barnes and giving the Bees a 1-0 lead. Zane Gurwitz advanced Fitzsimons to third on a ground out, and Leonardo Rivas scored him on a triple making the score 2-0, but second basemen Trace Loehr tried throwing Rivas out at third, and the ball went past Jesus Lopez at third, which allowed Rivas to score making it 3-0 Bees.
Torii Hunter would fly out to center for out number two, but the inning was far from over. Franklin Torres singled to right and Kevin Williams Jr walked, putting runners on first and second. Spencer Griffin then singled to left, but Torres was held up at third, loading the bases. Gleyvin Pineda walked to score a run and then Jimmy Barnes hit a bases clearing double to make the score 7-0 Bees. Heath Bowers then came in for Andueza and walked the next two batters, but Beloit would get out of the inning when Barnes got tagged out trying to stealing home on a past ball.
Hunter Hargrove can do it all
After Hargrove's big day at the plate yesterday, Beloit wanted to see what he could do on the mound, and had Hargrove pitch the eighth inning. However, he would not get a shutout innings, like in his first appearance of the year. After a lead off hit from Spencer Griffin, Barnes took first base after getting hit by a pitch for the second time in the game. Fitzsimons would then single to left, loading the bases with one out. Zane Gurwitz then shot a line drive to center, scoring Griffin and making the score 8-0. Rivas would add one more on a sacrifice fly to center, giving the Bees a 9-0 victory.
Two different offensive games
It was another frustrating game for the Beloit, as the Snappers suffered their fourth shutout loss of the season. Beloit managed just five hits in 31 at bats and was 0-9 with runners in scoring position. Meanwhile, Burlington came back with another great outing from the pitching staff, and the offense had a good all-around day. Seven of the nine hitters in the lineup had a hit for the Bees, and they totaled ten overall in the game. Burlington had three extra base hits and were 5-9 with runners in scoring position. Rivas totaled two RBI's in the game, bring his season total up to 18 on the season.
Looking ahead
Burlington will wrap up their series against the Snappers tomorrow at 2pm on Memorial Day. Oliver Ortega is expected to make his second start for the Bees, after winning both games he appeared in last week. Ortega has not allowed a run in nine innings pitched this year, has allowed only three hits, a walk, and has recorded nine strikeouts. Bees are hoping Ortega can keep his scoreless steak going in tomorrow's game. Beloit is expected to start Wyatt Marks, who is 3-4 with a 4.71 ERA this season. Marks has allowed three or more runs in four straight starts, after just allowing five runs combined in his five starts before. Tomorrow is also dollar Monday at Community Field. Admission tickets are just one dollar, hotdogs and Pepsi product cans will also only be one dollar.
