Doubleheader split in pair of extra inning contests

Cedar Rapids, IA - In a pair of extra inning games at Veterans Memorial Stadium at Perfect Game Field on Sunday afternoon the Clinton LumberKings walked away with a doubleheader split with the Cedar Rapids Kernels. Clinton (27-22) took game one 9-4 in ten innings behind a five-run top of the tenth and was then walked off by Cedar Rapids (23-24) 3-2 in eight innings in the back end of the twin billing.

GAME ONE

In what was intended to be a seven inning affair in game one of the doubleheader, the LumberKings came from behind to take game one 9-4 in 10 innings.

Royce Lewis, in his first multi-home run game of the season, staked the Kernels to an early 1-0 lead with a home run to left off LumberKings starter Clay Chandler.

Clinton then tied the game in the top of the second inning. Two walks and a single opened the inning, loading the bases with nobody out. The LumberKings managed only one run in the frame scoring on a Nick Thurman double play.

The Kernels reclaimed their lead in the bottom of the third inning with Lewis' second home run of the game. The long fly, in nearly the identical spot as his first, went out to left field and put Cedar Rapids on top 3-1.

The lead held until the LumberKings rallied for two runs in the sixth. Again, Clinton loaded the bases with nobody out and then lifted consecutive sacrifice flies to right to bring home two runs and tie the score at 3-3.

In the extra innings the teams traded a single run in the ninth before Clinton erupted for five runs in the top of the 10th inning against Kernels reliever Moises Gomez. Joseph Rosa drove home the first run with an RBI triple and was then followed by RBI singles by Ryan Costello and Eugene Helder before Thurman capped the rally with an RBI double.

Gomez (0-1) was charged with the loss for a two-inning outing in which he allowed six runs, five earned, while walking three and striking out five.

Marvin Gorgas (3-0) benefited from the 10th inning rally to pick up his third win of the season for holding the Kernels to one unearned run over his two innings of work.

Sam Delaplane worked the bottom of the 10th for Clinton and retired all three Kernels he faced to preserve the LumberKings 9-6 win.

GAME TWO

In the back end of the double header, the Clinton LumberKings received a strong start from Nick Wells who pick up a complete game for the first time in his professional career but was given the loss.

Wells (3-3) went 7.2 innings, a new professional high, allowing three runs on seven hits while walking one and striking out four.

The LumberKings led for most of the game after Joseph Rosa homered to right on just the third pitch of the game for his third big fly of the season.

Leading 1-0, Wells worked the bottom of the seventh and allowed game's tying run. Jose Miranda singled to lead-off the inning and was then replaced by pinch runner Jordan Gore. Jean Carlos Arias then singled to center to move Gore to third and Ben Rodriguez scored him with a sacrifice fly to center.

In the top of the tenth Rosa drove home his second run of the game, with a two out RBI single to right to put Clinton back out in front 2-1.

The Kernels then rallied for two runs in the bottom of the eighth off Wells to hand the LumberKings their first walk-off loss of the season. Royce Lewis plated Andre Bechtold with a sacrifice fly to right to split the doubleheader.
