ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The TinCaps shut out Beloit, 3-0, for their second victory in a row. Michael Kelly started and tossed six scoreless innings, while striking out four. T.J. Weir followed with two innings out of the pen. Bryan Verbitsky worked the ninth for the save. Fort Wayne scored all three of its runs in the top of the fourth as Michael Gettys plated a run and Chase Jensen drove in two.
DONUT DAY: Friday was Fort Wayne's second shutout victory of the season and second in the last six games. Fittingly, it came on National Donut Day.
GETTING HOT: The TinCaps have won two games in a row and are 11-6 since May 21. During that time, no one in the MWL has won more games. (Great Lakes and Cedar Rapids also have 11 wins.) Fort Wayne has won three consecutive series.
ALL-STAR PERFORMERS: Outfielder Nick Torres, who was named to MWL Eastern Division All-Star roster on Thursday, is on an eight-game hitting streak. Torres followed up a four-hit performance on Thursday with a pair of hits Friday night. Meanwhile, tonight's starter Thomas Dorminy, who also was named an All-Star, has picked up wins in each of his last two outings with quality starts.
ON WISCONSIN: The Timber Rattlers (formerly the Appleton Foxes and Fox Cities Foxes) have been in Midwest League since 1962 and affiliated with the Milwaukee Brewers since 2009.
ROSS MAKES MLB DEBUT: Former TinCaps pitcher Joe Ross, who pitched for Fort Wayne in 2012 and 13, made his Major League debut Saturday afternoon for the Nationals against the Cubs at Nationals Park. The 22-year-old Ross limited the Cubs to three runs on six hits over 5 innings. He was perfect through 3. Ross struck out four and didn't walk a batter as he threw 91 pitches. As a 19-year-old in 2012, Ross started Game 1 of the 2012 MWL Championship Series here in Wisconsin. He's the 134th Fort Wayne alum to make the majors.
