(Midland-MI)- A wild pitch in the fifth inning was the difference in a Bees' 4-3 loss to the Great Lakes Loons, on Saturday night, in game one of a three game series in Midland, Michigan.
After Loons' starter, Victor Gonzalez retired the Bees in order in the top of the first inning, Alex Verdugo led off the bottom of the inning with a double to right and moved to third on a Johan Mieses ground out. Michael Ahmed put Great Lakes on the board, lining a single to left, scoring Verdugo, making the score 1-0. After Josmer Cordero singled to right, Ivan Vela singled up the middle, scoring Ahmed, upping the Loons' lead to 2-0. Erick Salcedo prevented more damage in the inning, throwing out Josmer Cordero trying to score on a Spencer Navin single, keeping the score at 2-0.
Great Lakes added to their lead in the second inning. Jimmy Allen started the bottom half with an infield single and then moved all the way to third on a throwing error by Bees' starter Michael Bolaski, on a pick off attempt. The next batter, Kelvin Ramos, pushed the lead to 3-0 with a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Allen.
Trailing 3-0 in the top of the third, Wade Wass and Ryan Seiz singled back-to-back to open the frame. Erick Salcedo hit a ground ball to the third baseman, Vela, who threw to second to cut down Ryan Seiz on a fielders' choice for the first out of the inning. Jake Yacinich hit a slow roller to the first baseman, Josmer Cordero who threw to the plate, but late, allowing Wass to score, cutting the Loons' lead to 3-1. The Bees made it a one run game on a balk, charged to Victor Gonzalez, allowing Salcedo to score, making the score 4-3. With two outs, Andrew Daniel smacked a single to left, scoring Yacinich from second, tying the game at three.
With one out in the bottom of the fifth inning, Johan Mieses walked and then stole second, advancing to third on a throwing error. With Michael Ahmed at the plate, Mieses came home to score on a wild pitch, putting Great Lakes back on top, 4-3.
