SUNDAY SWEEP: The TinCaps swept a doubleheader against the West Michigan Whitecaps on Sunday afternoon. Fort Wayne took Game 1, 8-3, and then won Game 2, 6-3.
ALL-STAR ACE: Nick Margevicius leads the Midwest League in Fielding Independent Pitching a.k.a. FIP (2.44) and K/BB (8.44)... He's 2nd in K/9 (10.69), 2d in BB/9 (1.27), 2nd in BB% (3%), 3rd in K% (28%), and tied for 4th in HR/9 (0.42). Margevicius' 3.09 ERA is tied for the 8th best in the MWL and his 76 strikeouts rank 4th.
ORNELAS ON BASE: Tirso Ornelas is on a 25-game on-base streak, which is the 2nd longest active streak in the Midwest League, and is the longest such streak for a TinCap this season. (Lake County infielder Tyler Friis is currently on a 28-game streak. The longest in the league this year: 31 games, Michael Beltre, Dayton.) Since May 24, Ornelas has hit .318 with a .438 OBP. He has 6 doubles, 3 triples, 4 homers, and 16 RBIs during the run. Maybe most impressive, he's walked more times (17) than he's struck out (13)... The franchise record for consecutive games on base is 56 - set by Sean Burroughs in 1999.
POISED TO BREAK OUT: Jack Suwinski has a BABIP of .275 - the 13th lowest in the MWL. That's Batting Average on Balls in Play. BABIP is often a solid indicator of a player's luck and future performance. So at this point, Suwinski has been unlucky this year. Last year here he had a .302 BABIP. Typically around 30% of all balls in play fall for hits. He was at .258 entering Sunday before going 4-for-5, including a double and a home run. ... Meanwhile, defensively, Suwinski has 9 outfield assists - tied for 2nd most in the league. (Lansing's Chavez Young leads the way with 11.)
HOME SWEET HOME: The TinCaps are in the midst of a stretch of 10 consecutive home games. TinCaps are 23-16 at home this year, including wins in 15 of their last 21. Fort Wayne is slashing .265/.347/.377 at home this year compared to .216/.298/.317 on the road. The 'Caps have averaged 5.1 runs per game at home and 3.6 per game on the road, where they are 11-23.
LEAGUE LEADERS: Jeisson Rosario is tied for 5th in runs (46), tied for 8th in walks (39), and tied for 9th in OBP (.386)... Esteury Ruiz 3rd in SB (23).
ADVANCED STATS LEAGUE LEADERS: Jeisson Rosario is 10th in Line Drive % (24%) and 10th in BB% (15%)... Tirso Ornelas is 8th lowest in Swing and Miss% (7%).
BULLPEN BOOMERANG: TinCaps relievers have posted an ERA of 3.15 over the last 53 games. In this time, the 'pen has been led by Travis Radke, Caleb Boushley, Evan Miller, and Ben Sheckler. Through the first 19 games of the year, the bullpen had a 7.47 ERA.
PADRES ON DECK: Friday, the TinCaps and Padres agreed on a 2-year extension of their Player Development Contract (PDC) through the 2020 season. This will stretch the affiliation between the organizations to 22 years continuing what is already the longest-lasting Minor League Baseball affiliation in San Diego's franchise history. Padres Executive Vice President/General Manager A.J. Preller and TinCaps President Mike Nutter held a press conference at Parkview Field on Friday to announce the extension.
